November 9, 20169 yr I think it's a fair question to ask with how close the deciding states were. I know the narrative all along was that it would hurt Trump, but did it actually help him win?
November 9, 20169 yr This election is like that ball game that was close throughout and lost on a last second score. It was so close there are many, many things that made a difference and too many to pin it on one thing. Yes, the third party candidates hurt Hillary more than Trump. Here is the irony ... Bill Clinton won two elections in part because of third party candidate votes. Hillary Clinton lost hers in part due to the same thing.
November 9, 20169 yr Yes, the third party candidates hurt Hillary more than Trump. Agreed, but the third party wouldn't have had such a negative impact on the Democratic candidate if someone like Biden had been the nominee.
November 9, 20169 yr There is no way to know unless there is an exit poll of those who voted third party, why they voted third party.
November 9, 20169 yr Everything will play out the same. The two major parties nominate bad candidates, people start to make strides to a third party, one candidate loses in a close race, everyone blames third party, and people get brainwashed into thinking they can't vote for anything but the "big two". Nothing changes, everything remains the same. Great job sheep...
November 9, 20169 yr Author No. Hillary cost Hillary the election. Shouldn't have been close at all. I agree. Point of the thread is that almost everyone said that if you were voting 3rd party you might as well vote for Hillary. The results clearly didn't support that fallacy. On a related note, I was disappointed that Johnson wasn't able to get 5% of the vote.
November 9, 20169 yr Nothing seems to indicate that HRC suffered anymore than Trump from the 3rd parties. One would have to assume all the 3rd party would break to Dems for it to help. And of course there were Repubs who went third party.

November 9, 20169 yr As far as I could tell, Gary Johnson was the highest polling third party candidate and his supporters, at least IMO, have more in common with Trump than HRC. At best I think it actually hurt Trump more than HRC and at worst it had zero effect IMO.

Nothing changes, everything remains the same. Great job sheep... This is my thinking as well, and it's a real disappointment. I voted for McMullin, and I feel good about that. I'd have rather united around Johnson, but his very apparent lack of knowledge led me away from that. But one day I hope we as a country can break free of the idea that we must vote for one of these two parties. If you are only thinking about the single election, it will always feel like you are throwing your vote away. I voted third party because these people need to know that we deserve better candidates than what we were given, and that tea competition is always better.

The Libertarians appear to be as sheep like as any other segment of the population. We nominated Johnson because he was a known commodity, being a former Governor of New Mexico and former candidate for President. Not my guy. I was a supporter of Austin Petersen. However, I could not attend the convention in Orlando. If anything, this election has pushed me to be more active in the party, because of Johnson's showing and how he managed to step in it along the way. In fact, tonight I'm attending the monthly dinner held by the LP of Hillsborough County. First time for me.
