That's what they need to do! Throw the kitchen sink at BG. If you just line up and go straight at them - Goodnight Irene!

If BG is up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, it's over!

It amazes the amount of teams who to be gimmicky (Is that even a word) against BG. Teams will have entirely different type of practice, will completely adjust their offenses and defenses just for this one game. I've many types of "trick" plays, weird kickoffs or onsides during the game. It's good to try different stuff, but I swear some teams sike themselves out

Watt, you're correct, but if you have been defeated 11 out of the past 12 times modifying from what you have done in the past is your only shot right?

Then if they are not happy they should not run them as I did not say what they were coach in waiting

Yeah I know. I'm all for doing something different, but I've seen some silly things that put their team out of contention in the first quarter because of the stupid things they did.

I do feel Christian Co is BGs biggest challenge in 5a, other than possibly Cov Catholic, which is fairly even with the Colonals. I think BG wins, but, I feel CC will keep it closer than the prior game.. I think it'll be a 28-14 type game with the Purples scoring a late 4th quarter TD to stretch it to 35-14 in the end. A nice, solid win, but, not a shellacking as a lot of people think.

BG has the most talent every time they step on the field. That why they win so much. Plus they are well coached. Put talent and coaching together it makes it pretty easy. Christian is the only team who can match up with them athletically, but they will still lose.

Defense is champs at "staying home" or "staying in their coverage" BG defensive coaching staff is A+

Trickery will certainly get you beat with running clock sooner! Not sure how many times i have to say it. Opponents better take their time, win time of possession, no turnovers, keep BG offense off field.

Christian knows you cant beat BG with tricks and gadgets. It's all about execution and preparation. Play hard have fun and see where that takes you.. Its really is a great opportunity for em..

Don't make the mistake of thinking Christian County doesn't have the athleticism or skill to match up with Bowling Green. I do believe BG holds the edge on the line and running back, but it isn't like CC is bad at those positions either. The biggest two things that CC lacked over BG earlier in the year are (1) actually believing they can beat them and (2) staying diciplined on defense. Almost every team in the state struggles with the first one but hopefully CC has gained some confidence as of late. As far as number 2 goes, they have worked on that all year and hopefully will be ready. There is no doubt that they have played much better since an ugly game in the rain against Owensboro.

2 Sides of the Coin:

Side 1. I think Trap is right. It's a GREAT opportunity for Christian County. No pressure on Christian County at all! They are not supposed to win right! No time like the present right!

For Colonel, I don't think anyone has discounted the athletic ability of the Christian County skill guys. I think Keyron Catlett is one of the best in the state and Kenneth Major is one of the best cover guys. Also you don't have to worry about thinking you can beat BG if you score first. Defensive discipline will keep you in the game a lot longer for sure. :thumb:

Side 2. BGHS is 13 and 1 against Christian County at El Donaldson Stadium with the Colonel win coming in 1977.

The key for me to this game is can the Christian County offensive line protect the QB long enough to allow him the opportunity to try to establish a rhythm throwing the ball. IMO in Game 1 he never got in rhythm other than 1 skillfully thrown ball to Catlett in the corner of the endzone, but I think the score was 21-0 BG after 1. If that happens again, it's Goodnight Irene!

Also County's skill guys are great. My question is how many of them will play both ways tomorrow night? You can do that the first half, but not the second. BG has at least 4 guys who can take it to the house on any specific occasion. Catlett, Major and Long are good cover guys, but no one has stopped the BG O this season. Can you get pressure on the QB might be the better question because Clark Payne has proven if you give him plenty of time he will make you pay.

Looking forward to another great game at the El on Friday night! :thumb:

Great points! I'm really excited for this game because I know BG is legit! For the past few weeks it's been hard to judge if Christian County is a legitimate contender or a pretender. I believe this will be a great game, but if I'm wrong it'll be another running clock!

Kentucky New Era Game Preview....I think you could say that Coach Lovelace is confident!

Arguably the state’s top two high school football teams in Class 5A, No. 1 Bowling Green and No. 3 Christian County will meet in a familiar spot tonight — the second round of the state playoffs.

While the matchup may technically be the undercard leading up to December’s KHSAA state championship game, CCHS coach Steve Lovelace sees this pairing as the main event.

“I told our kids that this is a 12-round fight. In those big prize fights, you can go out in one round or you can go out in 12,” he said. “There will be some haymakers thrown by both sides, but it’s about who really connects, and who can handle that adversity.”

The last time Christian County knocked off Bowling Green in a high school football contest was Nov. 12, 2010, also in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Since that loss, the Purples have gone an astounding 80-3 and won four state championships, including three wins over the Colonels (2012, 2013, 2015) in additional second-round state playoff showdowns.

Tonight, as host BG rides the state’s longest winning streak (23 games) and boasts a 39-year drought since Christian County’s last win at El Donaldson Stadium, CCHS and BGHS will once again do battle with a trip to the regional championship game on the line.

“Nobody’s really giving us a chance, but we are,” Lovelace said. “I told our kids this week, ‘Let’s just show up and play them.’ I want to go compete, because it’s about who has the best football team. And right now, on paper, they do. They’re a big challenge for our kids, so we just want to make sure we show up.”

The Colonels revisited game film this week from their 42-22 loss to Bowling Green from earlier in the season. Lovelace said his players were able to see a staunch difference between the way they’re playing now and the way they looked in that Aug. 26 loss to the Purples at BGHS.

“We went down there in Week 2 and didn’t play well at all. This week, we watched our film from that game and even our kids could see the difference in the demeanor with which we played. It was humbling,” Lovelace said. “Our kids know Bowling Green is good, but they also know (we) can be better.”

“This is do or die. And that doesn’t mean you have to go out there and play perfect, but you have to play your game,” he continued. “It’s going to be about everybody doing their jobs. I don’t have to go out there and be Superman and put a cape on and do extra — it’s about doing my job, knowing your reads, doing your assignments. And in the first game, I don’t think we did our job.

“No one kid (tonight) is going to turn the game around by himself. It’s going to take a team effort.”

Bowling Green (11-0) owns the “mental edge,” according to Lovelace, and will try to create swift doubt, just like the Purples did in building an abrupt 21-0 lead in the teams’ first matchup in late August. If the Colonels (9-2) can stay close, or even build a post-halftime lead, however, Lovelace likes his chances.

“They haven’t had a close, four-quarter game, so we want to take it all the way down to the wire,” he said. “We want to give ourselves a chance to complete, and then, at the end to win it.”

Since adopting an up-tempo offensive scheme in early October against Apollo, and getting fast, physical, consistent play from its defense the past several weeks, the Colonels seem to be clicking on all cylinders at exactly the right time.

County has won its last four games in a row by a combined score of 180-22.

“I hope we’re hitting our stride right now, but it’s tough to say,” Lovelace said. “What I love right now is the effort and that our kids are playing hard. That’s all you can ask. Now, let’s keep playing hard, stop making the stupid mistakes and see what happens.”

Bowling Green has given up just 89 points in 11 games. The Purples have allowed a season-high 22 points in a game twice in 2016. Once to John Hardin in the opener and again to Christian County in the second week of the season.

The Cols shut out John Hardin in their regular season finale a couple weeks ago.

“If you win, you get to play for a regional championship. If you lose, you have to turn your stuff in on Monday,” Lovelace said. “There are a lot of seniors (around the state) who turned their stuff in last week. So I asked our group, ‘Do you want to turn your stuff in now or not?’ They’ve got to dig down deep if they want it.”

Should CCHS win tonight, the Colonels would advance past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since the aforementioned win over Bowling Green in 2010. County would take on the winner of Owensboro and Greenwood in the quarterfinals.

It’s a tall task, but Lovelace knows his team is capable.

“I don’t think we’ve played our best ball yet,” Lovelace said. “If we go over there and pull this off, it won’t be a shock to me. I know what they can do.”

Bear,

Thanks for posting this! I agree that Coach Lovelace seems pretty confident.

I'm curious as to how you see this one playing out?

Since that loss, the Purples have gone an astounding 80-3 and won four state championships, including three wins over the Colonels (2012, 2013, 2015) in additional second-round state playoff showdowns.

Good grief, its hard to wrap your head around that.
