Colonels at Purples Take 2!

 

Colonels come into this game playing as well as anytime this season! Colonels lost 42-22 at the El in Week 2. Those 22 points are tied with 22 points BG yielded Week 1 v John Hardin. RB Trayquan Haskins-Taylor has been solid this season gaining 610 yards on 84 carries and 12 TDs (plus overcame an injury). But the passing machine is what the Colonels are known for. JR QB Langhi has played well going 138 for 221 (62%) for 1,945 yards and 20 TDs vs 11 INTs.

Mr. Colonel Keyron Catlett has had a Super Senior campaign with 44 catches for 744 yards and 8 TDs, plus running it for 188 yards and 3 TDs.

But likely the largest undervalued story for County this season has been the improvements with the Colonels defense. Last season vs same schedule County yielded 287 points; this season they yielded 156 points. 131 points. That's significant improvement in my book.

 

The Purples have executed as well as any Purples team I can recall. The offense has scored more than 40 points every game but St Xavier (31). QB Clark Payne has played outstanding passing over 72% efficiency and over 2,700 yards 33TDs vs only 2 INTs! WOW! RB Jamale Carothers has over 900 yards rushing with 17 TDs; 32 receptions over 600 yards and 8 TDs - Outstanding! Deangelo Wilson and Luke Brown have combined for over 70 catches, 1,400 yards and 19 TDs!

 

The Purple defense was supposed to be the question mark going into the season. Well throw that question mark away. The Purples have only yielded 89 points all year and a majority of those points are yielded by the second and third string guys, which is great because they are learning and getting ready to step up when called upon.

 

I see the Colonels trying to run the clock as much as they can early, but that can be tough for a passing team. But what the Colonels need most is passing rhythm. If the Colonels QB and receivers can't get in sync I think it's going to be a long night. The Colonels D is much improved from Week 2, but this Purples offense is special and I don't think they will ultimately stop them without at least 3-4 turnovers or some special teams scores. Not a knock on County as I think they are really good, just drawing a Tough road assignment here!

Who ya got and why?

I'm picking Christian County purely based on the fact of being a homer. I have no other valid reason because I really don't know how much this team has improved since that running clock beat down in week two. I think the Purples will have to win this game, I think the Colonels will try to limit BG's big play ability. So I'm picking Christian County 21-14. With the winner going on to win 5A

Christian County has some good weapons to use against BG and a coaching staff that is smart enough to know how to create a close game. Knowing and doing are two separate things.

 

They know to use the play clock to their advantage

They know how to try to keep BG offense off the field

They know what players on BG needs to be shadowed

 

They know a lot but is it enough to stop the Purples from doing their thing. Im a bit bias but im not sure the perfect gameplan vs BG would be enough to stop the purples. The Purples have great potential to score on almost every possession. Not sure County can do that.

 

I do think Christian County has best chance of any 5A club due to their offensive schemes

 

Want to see how good little Vito is for BG? I say he will match up vs their D1 recruit and will more than hold his own against him.

Christian will go air rade and run the clock on the purples

This game will be just like the 1st game. Purples 42-21.

Christian Co is arguably the number 2 team in 5A, but definitely in top 5. I feel like due to the way the defense has played since the Owensboro game and the overall athleticism of the whole team, they are 5A's best shot at beating BG. With that said, it will be tough for any of them to challenge BG.

I expect this game to be closer than the week 2 game. Week 2 was a long time ago and it is now win or go home. With that said, I still believe wins and wins big. 38-14 something like that. No first half running clock or anything. It's possible to get one in the second half. But Christian County will come ready to play. But BG would have to play terrible and Christian County would have to play well for them to have a good chance to win.

I've seen CC - good team, but they will be crushed. 49-0 (any scoring will be at the end when BG has backups in).

Interesting Tib Bit:

 

SR RB Jamale Carothers had 3 TDs last Friday vs Marshall County.

 

He is now 3 TDs away from tying former RB Avery Hibbett for the All-Time BGHS points leader and 4 TDs away from breaking it.

 

While I don't expect Carothers to get the record this Friday; I do see him scoring a couple times. And feel this is an added goal that the whole team wants to get for Jamale's Senior Season! And an additional incentive to keep moving on in the playoffs!
