While Democrats were running on making schools better and cities more vibrant (whether or not any of the plans worked), a lot of Republicans were winning elections by screaming about welfare queens and looking to the glorious past, a time that wasn't so great to be black in this country. Someone once told me that the difference between perception and reality is that perception is stronger. The Republicans have made hay by selling themselves in a way that just can't possibly be appealing to a lot of people. Wasn't that the almighty GOAT Ronald Reagan who coined "Welfare Queen"? Yeah, so appealing.
October 28, 20169 yr You missed the point. We've always needed laws to ensure voting accuracy. The perception is that it suddenly has become urgent and necessary AFTER record voting turnout among blacks. Nothing to see here.
October 28, 20169 yr Most racist white people identify as Republicans, I'd say that's why. I agree that there are good black Republicans, but they are few and far between in comparison. And the way the black republicans present themselves has been terribly unappealing.

There are a lot of very good black Republicans, does the black community not listen to them because they think they act white since its Republicans? Go to a Republican Party get together and have a conversation about the concept Black Lives Matter. Not the actual people involved. Not the Soros and other backdoor fund raisers of the BLM movement. Simply talk about the concept of Black Lives Matter and then report back with what is said.

October 28, 20169 yr If people are looking for the real reason blacks stopped voting overwhelmingly Republican can look at Herbert Hoover. The Great Flood of 1927. When scandals had threatened to break over the distribution of flood aid to African Americans, Hoover turned to Robert Moton to keep a lid on the scandal. Moton had succeeded Booker T. Washington as head of both the Tuskegee Institute and “the Tuskegee Machine,” the political operation that generally exercised near veto power over appointments of southerners by Republican presidents. African Americans generally and Moton personally also played an important role at the 1928 Republican National Convention for Hoover. Although African Americans could not vote in most elections in the South, they often controlled the Republican Party in southern states. And there was one place they could vote—at the Republican National Convention for the presidential nominee. When Hoover promised Moton that he would break up large plantations and make sharecroppers landowners, an ecstatic Moton told other African American leaders this would be “more significant than anything which has happened since Emancipation .” Moton was in charge of black delegates to the convention, and this virtually guaranteed Hoover a base. With help from African Americans, the push from the media, and Moton’s successful efforts to suppress scandal, Hoover won the GOP nomination on the first ballot and easily went on to win the 1928 presidential election. African Americans Shift from the Party of Lincoln The aftermath of the flood soon prompted the shift of African American voters away from the Republican Party. Ironically, this shift began with Hoover’s historic 1928 landslide win. Since Reconstruction, no Republican presidential candidate had carried a single southern state. Largely because the 1928 Democratic candidate Al Smith was Catholic, Hoover carried five: Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, and North Carolina. As a result, GOP political operatives saw the possibility of creating a Republican Party in the South that could compete with the Democrats. Since African Americans could not vote in the South, that party would be all white. After the election, Robert Moton’s influence in the Hoover camp eventually declined, and Hoover turned away from the base that had won him his office. Hoover even nominated a man to the Supreme Court so racist that a Senate controlled by his own party rejected the nominee. To Moton’s great disappointment, Hoover abandoned his proposal to transform sharecroppers into landowners. Moton and other black political leaders regarded this as a personal betrayal; that and the GOP’s outreach to white southerners ended many African Americans’ emotional connection to the party of Lincoln.
