Got to have options, so how about we use your scenario and also offer a 2 year trade program run by the government? You can opt to go to a TVA type program where they put you to work to learn a trade. After 2 years you go find a job.

And if you live in California try to get accepted to the big schools such as USC. 16.5 %. acceptance rate. Only 41% from the state itself.

I believe Berea College is free to anyone who attends but work study is part of the deal. That plus a large endowment make free college possible there.

Colleges that are going to be feee will become like a high school, show up and do some work and pass. There will be so many people at the free college that professors will be overwhelming worked and can't grade proficiency good enough.

A lot of college debt can be avoided IMO. My parents couldn't afford to send me away to school, so I commuted to NKU and worked part time. They could only afford two years, so I got an associates degree which has served me well. Other kids in my same position went to vocational school, and are doing quite well also. Good plumbers, electricians, mechanics and carpenters are hard to find.

 

When my kids went to college, they had friends who went away to school, joined fraternities and sororities, never missed spring break, and ran up huge loans. That's crazy.

 

I know there are kids trying to make it the right way, but there are far too many racking up needless debt.

You can get an associates from KCTCS for less than $10,000. You can easily earn that working part time while going to school. if you decide to go on to get your bachelors degree you would start debt free.

I know this is an overly simplistic answer, but lets think of it this way. Suppose your taxes go up $50/month. Over the next 25 years that's going to cost you $15k (not including interest you could have earned). What do you think the average 4 year college cost will be for your children when they are ready to attend? Is there not a good possibility that what we pay into the system now, would save us money in the long term?? Again, I know this is overly simplistic and is assuming a lot of things....the big one being that everyone would pay equally in the "college tax".

 

So everybody pays a tax that is less than the cost of a higher education, but the program still provides a full fledged higher education at the rates dictated at the time of attendance for those consuming the program. What you have described is ponzi scheme. We already have one of those. It's called Social Security.

Sorry if it came across as me being a major champion of the idea. All I am saying his other countries do it and why can't we. I don't like people dismissing the idea with zero consideration of it being possible. I would like to hear more information and details on how it would work before making a decision on it one way or the other.

I don't like dismissing it either. It's not just other countries but some states here in America offer free college education to state schools if you are a resident. I don't know why we can't do the same in every state.
