October 17, 20169 yr That is not news to me, Hatz. The only thing that has kept Islamic terrorism in check over the centuries has been brutal force. Carter's bungling of the Iranian Hostage crisis was taken as a sign of extreme weakness. He also deserves an extremely low rating for his mismanagement of the economy. When I think of Carter, I think of the Iranian hostages' ordeal and the "misery index." In a nutshell, that is his legacy and it warrants a very low rank among American presidents. In modern history, only Obama's decision to send a ransom to Iran in the form of a plane load of cash compares to Carter's acquiescence to Iranian will. But it certainly didn't start with Carter. Carter was trying to get the hostages home alive. That, for better or worse, was what drove his response. I'm not sure that any President has been perfect in responding to Middle Eastern terrorism.

October 17, 20169 yr He was a Naval Officer, I don't think he was a complete pacifist. Probably not completely. Upon further research it says that he long dreamed of attending the U.S. Naval Academy, but it also said that he was a good student who was seen as reserved and quiet in contrast to the academy's culture of aggressive hazing of freshmen. I gather that he his patriotism influenced his path while his calm nature probably never had him having a taste for blood. It sounds like he did very well in the service, but was honorably discharged after the death of his father, and while feeling restricted by the the rigidity of the military he opted to go back to the peanut farming life and take over the family business.
