Dixie got on the scoreboard first with a TD pass to Ben Haggerty (#3) early in the first quarter. Haggerty also ran in the two point conversion to make it 8-0. Campbell Co tied it up on a short 2-3 yard run by Austin Johnson in the second quarter. The two point conversion tied the game and the teams went into halftime at 8-8.

 

Haggerty took the second half kickoff all the way to the house. The two point conversion failed and Dixie led 14-6. Dixie extended it's lead on a short TD run by #24. The extra point was good to make the score 21-8.

 

With about 4 minutes left to go in the game the reserves entered the game for both teams and Dixie's reserves scored the final TD in the closing seconds of the game.

 

I was impressed with both teams. For Campbell Co, Johnson, Shea, and Steffen looked good. The also had some size on the line. Dixie seems to have excellent overall team speed.

Conner beat Ryle tonight 7-0. It was an ugly game. Conner moved the ball well at times but Ryle could not move the ball at all. I know this is going to be beating a very dead horse but has the officiating been as bad at all games and at all levels this year more so than other years? Very poorly called games on both sides and calls that make no sense at all...thoughts????

NCC defeated Ludlow yesterday 27-0. The Breds next game will be Thurs. against an undefeated Holy Cross team, on the hill at Newport Catholic. Good luck to both young teams.

The Highlands/Simon Kenton game was a good one. As pointed out above, Simpson for Simon Kenton is a good runner and plays some good defense. Kaiser (sp?) also ran the ball well on some quick hits up the middle. 72 on defense played well also. Very nice ball club.

 

Probably catch some flack from my son for saying this, but the Birds seemed flat (again). Perhaps that's a sign of confidence, I don't know. They do seem very business like and unemotional in their approach to the game. I'll give the Baby Birds this: after the Pioneers scored at the end of the 3rd quarter to take the lead, the Birds did not panic. They then methodically marched down the field to regain the lead. There were some very solid blocks thrown during the drive and the rb's read the blocks and ran threw the holes very well. It was almost seemed as if the Birds could have done that on every drive if they wanted to. We have to hold onto the football better and cut down on the penalties. I think we had 4 fumbles, 2 of which we lost. Penalties stopped a couple of nice drives and a roughing the punter penalty (or whatever its called) allowed Simon Kenton to restart the drive in the 3rd quarter that resulted in the go ahead td. Liked the effort in trying to block the punt, but have to make sure you are not going to hit the punter if you don't get the block. But the kids are freshmen and learning from your mistakes is what its all about.

 

On defense, the Birds played pretty well. Simpson ran through some tackles and we've got to do a better job stopping that quick handoff right up the middle. But all and all the defense played pretty good I thought. After the Birds scored and we kicked off to Simon Kenton, the defense shut Simon Kenton's offense on their last attempt to score. Our defense also did have a very nice goal line stand that ended up being the difference in the game.

 

We played well enough to win and I guess a win is a win. Perhaps that will be the demeanor this group has throughout their high school career. Very business like and simply getting the job done when needed to.

 

Impressed with both teams all in all. Good luck Pioneers in the rest of your season. Good job Birds. Keep working hard, keep striving to get better and keep winning. You are half way to your goal of an undefeated season, winning the championship and delivering the streak to next year's freshmen. You can do it. Get ready for the Cougars. At 4-1, they must have a good team and would love to be the team that stops the Cake eaters' streak.
