Think about this, bullet drop is over 100 feet at that range. Meaning the rifle is actually aiming over 100' above the target. This is done by precisely ranging the target and properly adjusting the optics on the rifle to allow for the bullet drop. Then they have to allow for any breeze that is blowing across that mile of distance.

 

These guys aren't just trigger pullers, they are much much more than that...they are precision instruments.

Back in the day we had to try to do that with windage and elevation. Now they have some seriously technical adjusters for their aid.

Carlos Hathcock made a shot (2500 yards) like this back in 1967 using a .50 Cal M2 machine gun with a scope slapped on the side of it...oh and he hit the front forks of a bicycle at that range.
