Good discussion everyone I have enjoyed it. If you have a kid at sk via open enrollment that hasn't seen the field I wish you had opted to go to Scott. They could use just a few more good players to be competitive like last year. Good luck with the remainder of your season!

All 3 KC high schools have benefited from open enrollment a time or two.

 

That gets forgotten. Remember when Dixie was the first one to have the state of the art renovations, and they had 100 kids on their roster, oh wait.

Open enrollment absolutely hurts Scott. I personally know 4 players in my own neighborhood that are borderline players at sk that rarely see the field that are good enough to start at Scott and be solid contributors. They opt for open enrollment rather than attending Scott. Kids right now are opting to stand on the sidelines for 4 years hoping for a state championship. The irony is if a few of them attended Scott each year the would get to actually play AND get a chance for a ring. Until this stigma goes away it is likely to be this way.

 

About the game: Scott's best offensive and defensive player was out with injury. They started a qb that has never played the position before and had 2 days of practice to learn a few plays. A majority of the team consists of sophomores and juniors. All things considered I felt they never quit and continued to battle despite the result. Conner is a solid team but this game is no measuring stick.

 

This is the one and only post I will make on this subject. My kid is an open enrollment to Simon Kenton. Even though we live in the city of Independence and are a part of that community the school district lines say we go to Scott. My son grew up playing for South Kenton and developed relationships with most of his teammates years ago. The vast majority of the open enrollment kids I know are in this exact same situation. While I understand that the school board draws lines to keep enrollment even it does not change community involvement or life long friendships. I personally know of no open enrollment kids that are leaving their respective communities to come to SK. It is the kids in Independence who are choosing to stay and play in Independence that are open enrolling. We root for Scott when we are not playing them, they are our neighbors and I have a lot of friends whose kids attend Scott. Our open enrollment has nothing to do with a dislike for Scott HS but what we have built in Independence.

BTW - Conner gets Ryle at home. A little rain, a little of Conner grass(/dirt/mud) field, who knows? Conner has some speed. Webster looked great running the ball. I would get him more touches.

You're right about the bolded above dig. My apologies to Conner and Scott fans for threadjacking earlier.

 

I believe Conner is going to give Ryle fits next week. It's going to be a donnybrook all right.

 

Scott graduated quite a bit from last year but their going to be OK. Eagles have a good coaching staff and the underclassmen will reap the benefits of experience this year.

Actually, I was referring to the athletic complex itself, not when the turf came in to play. Dixie did not have an on campus baseball and softball field. Baseball games were played on a field behind Turkey Foot Middle school and I don't remember where the softball was played.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm just stating the fact that Kenton county has open enrollment, do you deny that? Are you two saying that not one player that plays for SK doesn't live in Scotts school district?

 

Not getting anything in a bunch. There are absolutely kids on the SK roster who have open enrolled at SK. The kids don't necessarily make the decision to open enroll and there are many reasons why parents may make the decision to send there children elsewhere up to and including academics. Right, wrong, or indifferent Scott does not have the best social or academic reputation either. These factors come into play when parents decide to fill out the open enrollment paperwork. Don't just think it's for football.

You stated that many of them opt to stand on the sideline and hope for a state championship. That may be somewhat true but I know for a fact that many if not most of these kids who have open enrolled are big time contributors across all 4 grades and starters in their respective sports. I just posted a response to a similar post so you can add that to this post. Reputation is something else to think about. When Scott stops taking kids who have been kicked out of Holmes (I know of 6 there this year) maybe parents will feel more comfortable keeping their kids in Scott.

Correct. In fact the young man had never played qb before and was asked Wednesday if he would take over from what I was told. Two days of practice was all he had to prepare. My understanding is that he (or someone) will have to hold down the fort for the next few weeks.
