August 31, 201610 yr Author This could be a category 1 hurricane by in the morning. Here is the latest HRRR image. The brown is showing winds of about 87 mph. A Category 2 storm starts at around 96 mph sustained wind speed. I'll update later this evening. 8 am is the end of the run for the High Resolution Rapid Refresh Model. It updates every hour. 8 AM EDT

Largo 9.84 Baskin 9.66 Seminole 7.03 St. Petersburg 6.96 Gulfport 6.57 Kenneth City 6.40 Pinellas Park 5.42 Shore Acres floods if somebody pees in their front yard, so I didn't bother posting that. Not that much wind, yet, though. I guess I'll have to drive the truck to work tomorrow. :irked:

Hurricane Camille in 1969 devastating Louisiana and Mississippi, and rains from its leftover Low pressure caused dams to fail in West Virginia that killed a lot of people. It has to rank fairly high I would think. It even made a cameo in the Forrest Gump movie.

Katrina, Sandy and Ike are ranked 1,2,3 respectively. Katrina was the 3rd deadliest. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. It was a cat. 4 hurricane that killed between 8,000-12,000 people. It really depends one what one would think is worst deaths or cost. Hurricane Camille in 1969 devastating Louisiana and Mississippi, and rains from its leftover Low pressure caused dams to fail in West Virginia that killed a lot of people. It has to rank fairly high I would think. It even made a cameo in the Forrest Gump movie. Camile had the highest wind estimates around 190 mph. It is ranked in the top 5.
September 1, 201610 yr This thing is starting to act an awful lot like Hurricane Elena. That one started out like this, became a hurricane, then veered east and decided to spend Labor Day weekend parked about 50 miles off the coast of Cedar Key. As a strengthening category 2, it reeked havoc from Sarasota to Apalachicola. Pinellas County took the worst of the coastal damage in the Bay Area. The storm then turned back northwest making landfall in Louisiana or Alabama as a cat 3. Before Elena, Indian Rocks Beach had a really nice fishing pier. After Elena, it was gone and was never replaced. I had bought my first house in the Northdale area of Tampa, by then. The house I lived in when I first moved to Florida, two blocks off Indian Rocks Beach, was destroyed. The Courtney Campbell Causeway, which links Rock Point to Clearwater across Tampa Bay, was under water. When the storm was over, the causeway remained closed due to the erosion and collapse of the roadway.
September 1, 201610 yr I heard folks on the radio say this was similar to Hurricane Kate, in 1985. I should remember that better, but I was in high school mode. On the radio it was said Kate didn't have high wind or a major cane, but it caused a lot of problems.
