fusion Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 This was a nail bitter. Vallley was up by 3 with 30 seconds to go in the game. Matewan scored with 25 seconds left, and then intercepted the ball on Valley's Hail Mary to end the game. #22 for the Tigers was utterly dominating Valley's defense. After their QB got injured, they just hiked the ball to him and let him run it. Probably 90 percent of their plays involved him running the ball. Valley's QB took what I thought was a late hit, or at least roughing the passer, on Valley's touchdown to take the lead. I believe he came back for the final few plays though. Does anyone know anything about Matewan? I think they were ranked 8th in WV for Class A.
newarkcatholicfan Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Sounds like this one was one of those great games for the fans but one the coaches would not have been in.
Booge Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 The WV folks are saying this is Matewan's best team in 10 years, which says a lot since they are always very good...Good game for SV although by listening to this one on the radio for 3 quarters, it sounded like Matewan was getting hosed bigtime...
InTheLoop Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 I believe that the RB for Matewan set a new WV state record for rushing yards in a game with something like 580 yards, surpassing the old mark of 465 set in 2002.
Herosofthegame Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Matewan is usually good sucks that Valley lost but it seems that valley is starting to improve and become the program that it can be.
BuzzerBeater Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 I have heard that this wasn't the Matewan of old...They still looked really good to me though...I also heard that they lost their best running back because of a broken hand...This game shouldn't have even been close...Matewan should have won by 2 or 3 touchdowns at least...Does anyone know the lil running backs offical numbers?....I know at half time he had 170 some yards....Congrats to Matewan and the young man that had an excellent game
Belfry Wins Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Yeah Matewan isnt what they usualy are this year. Honestly 1a football in WV is weaker than alot of ky football period. But Matewan isnt tuff as they once was. Especialy this year they have a real weak secondary. Their Coach was extremely worried about teams passing on him this year.

Don't believe everything you hear. Matewan is solid...but no way are they as talented as they've been in the past 10 years. Due to the political, economic and educational mess Mingo Co finds themselves in, the county's sports teams have suffered.

This in fact is a true statement. In all honesty with no bias for either team, just a neutral standpoint, Matewan beat Shelby Valley a lot harder than the score indicated. It would have truley been a crime if Matewan did not win, and I wouldn't have been suprised to see Matewan beat SV by around 20, because if you were in attendence, or if you listened to the radio it was clear Matewan was beating them a lot more than the score indicated. To be honest, the only reason Shelby Valley hung descent numbers was due to the weak secondary of Matewan. It was basically a fade every time for Valley that any progess was made down field. However, by throwing on the weak secondary (the fade especially) they did score, but like I said and like others have said this should have been Matewans by 2-3 touchdowns. McCoy, the RB for Matewan had an incredible game, and basically ran at Will on SV's defense. He had 170 at the half, and I wouldnt be suprised if he didn't finish with around 300+ rushing yards. All this with a 93 yard called back, not to mention like a 50 yarder called back. More importantly he was Matewans 2nd rusher as their number one guy went down with an injury earlier this season. Like said to sum all this up, a few skewed calls may have brought the score closer, but in all actuality the game wasn't that close at all.
Morehead State Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Good win For the Matewan Tigers though.. seemed like it was hard fought.

Well with alot of bias lol im going to say that even if shelby valley wasnt as good as the score said then what really helped SV was the coaching since Saunders and his staff did pick out matewans weak secondary so in all SV played good and used matewans weakness against. In the end it didnt win them the game but they still stayed close to matewan and thats showing that SV is improving coaching wise and that can make or break a game that was this close.
FullCount Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 According to the AP, WYMT, & WTRF-TV in Northern WV... McCoy's finals stats look like this: 33 carries for 537 yards... 6TD's (60,30,13,4,73,and 93) 8th Best in National History!!!
newarkcatholicfan Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 Valley missed five extra points and on top of that they had a two point conversion try stopped. Special teams really killed Valley. I just finished watching their week one game and I now understand whey they were going for two on those late touchdowns. One extra point during that game was short as it did not even make it to the back of the endzone.
