I definitely get the attachment to your pet over a stranger. Why wouldn't you be more attached to your pet?

My thing is this... I would be heartbroken if I had to watch or let my pet die, but there's no way I could live with myself knowing I did nothing to help a dying person, regardless if I know them or not.

Plenty of strangers in the world, I only have 1 dog. :walk:

I can flip that scenario right around and it still be true.

Difference being I know the dog I don't know the stranger.

Dog: 1 Stranger: 0

Here's why I voted yes.

I had a church member some 20 years ago that was a K-9 officer. He was in pursuit of a man who fled in his vehicle from a felony.

My friend got out and followed him into a wooded area. His dog, Bodi, went ahead to find the culprit. Bodi crested a hill prior to Tim and a shot rang out. Bodi was killed instantly. Tim returned fire with the man and the man was wounded in the leg. After an hour or two of negotiations by Tim, the man surrendered.

Bodi took the bullet that was meant for Tim. Had Bodi not been so well trained and protective of Tim, the man would have shot my friend when he crested the hill.

Just my opinion on why I say yes.

If you would choose an animal life over a human one, we'll just have to agree to disagree brother.

Lost a lot of faith in humanity in the last 12 months.

Heartbreaking, but awesome at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

Also speaks to the loyalty dogs show. They'll constantly put themselves in harms way to protect us without a second thought for their own well-being.

I hear you.

Heck I lost faith in humanity just reading this thread.

I would most definitely kill a human who was intentionally causing harm to my dog...

I see Police dogs being different from normal animals, but in no way do I equate a Police dog with a human Police officer.

Dogs are used as a tool to save human lives. They are not officers. They do as they are told and trained. Their lives are not as valuable as a humans. If we go down that road we should all be vegetarians lest we all go to prison for chicken, and a steak.

Let's change that up a bit.

You're an officer.

You are also the K-9 officer.

Your real-life partner is shot and is still in harm's way. Your dog was also shot and is also in harm's way. You can only save one. Can we assume you'd save the human first?

If I'm a K-9 officer and I have to shoot a criminal and the criminal gets a shot off hitting my dog, you better believe I am attempting to save my dog before I attempt to save the criminal.
