Stinking Chicago thieves

Featured Replies

So I go to use my debit card this morning, and it's declined. I call to see why, someone tried to run about $1,000 worth of purchases this morning on my card. My debit card information was stolen while I was in Chicago. Props to Commonwealth Credit Union for flagging that and putting a stop on it. However I now have to go in Monday and get a new card, just creates a little bit of a hassle. Would love to find the person that did this and just choke them.

Sorry to hear this. At least your credit union was alert and shut your account down. It's happened to me with a credit card in India before. Got a phone call on Christmas Day that they were closing it due to fraud. Same thing happened to a co-worker who went to Vegas (they were turned over to a collection agency from CA)

It's happening a lot in the NKY area right now. Also similar to your story there have been a lot of reports of guys stealing credit card info in Chicago area and traveling south to KY to try to make large purchases with the stolen card information.

And you guys are flummoxed about my efforts to use cash money where possible. Pshaw.

How much more protected am I now that I have a card with a chip in it?

If your bank is doing what they are supposed to be doing, you should be fine. Any time I've ever used my card away from home it's either been declined, or PNC called me immediately to validate the purchase.

If someone steals it and uses it close to where you live, that's a different issue.

I use my debit at a local gas station that I frequent and a few other local businesses, but when I go to Richmond or Lexington I always take enough cash to pay for whatever I need. I don't like handing out my card to anyone where they can take it away from my eyesight.

I don't understand people who carry no cash and use their card for everything. A guy at our clubhouse pro shop, where I work part time, recently paid for a $2 drink with a debit card. That drives me crazy!

I'm that guy. I just rarely have cash o me, though I think I am going to start keeping more on me...I tend to spend less when I do that.

My co-worker also had his info stolen on his credit card and it was shut down Thursday while we were still in Chicago.

I use credit only for any purchases over $5. It helps me track my purchases and if I have a problem I let the CC company take care of it. Never have had a debit card and never plan to have one.

I am very protected. I can't remember my pin number so not even I can use it.

Bet that'll add up in a hurry.

Does your card ever leave your hand? If so not much.

Haha I think I'm that guy. If I lose or have my wallet stolen you're generally not getting much but a bunch of plastic cards and that's it.

I generally only keep cash for tipping purposes.

Not a Christian thought, but I remember thinking that chopping off hands would be a good punishment for a thief, when it happened to me. Someone broke into my car and the feeling of being violated was overpowering.
