I'll throw this out there....After this week, does anyone else think one (or more) of the Trump children have a future in politics? All were impressive IMO.

Trump was more impressive when he was younger as well. Hopefully the kids don't end up like their dad.

Hey, I watch them all. Can't say I'll be tuning into Fox anytime soon after reading some of the turmoil circulating over there.

 

I prefer CNN because I like the personalities better. Even the Trump ones. I also like how thy add in some non- Trump Republicans which is still a good portion of the party.

Totally agree, HRC will not be overly mean, I think she will turn this into her being the victim. Which may be a good plan at this point.

I heard a lot of what Trump will do as President and as has been pointed out, very little about how. What he said he would do, like be the Law and Order President and end this violence against the police--really fast, and end the Isis threat--fast etc., makes me wonder how he will accomplish it. Short of declaring martial law, I don't see how he's going to have a big impact on Law and Order within a short amount of time.

 

Will he rule by fiat? Seriously, what does Trump think he can do from the Oval Office? If this was not America where the executive branch has limited powers and is held in check by two other branches of government, I would think Trump was going to rule like a dictator, a benevolent one, of course. I am assuming this is not what he meant because he couldn't possibly mean that, but is there anything in what he actually said that demonstrates he does not mean that? He told us to believe he was going to do what he said on many occasions, but I just can't believe he would do that.

He seems to have a lot of the same enemies and dislikes many conservatives do, but he doesn't share their principles in getting there. The tone of his speech came across as awkwardly pro-government in the sense that he can fix problems once he has power. And that was his solution, "I alone will fix this."

That quote was in reference to someone noting that Trump kept asking people to believe he would accomplish the stuff he was promising, like Law and Order.

 

No, is my answer. The difference I see is that most (read "every other") candidates promise to accomplish a bunch of stuff but then mention working with their own party in the House and Senate and even reaching across the aisle to work with those members of the opposite party who are willing to work together towards a goal, like reducing the national debt (hey, there's an idea).

 

Trump spoke as if he would do all that he promised to do, unilaterally. I did not hear him mention enlisting the aid of Speaker Ryan or Senate Leader Mitch McConnell. He sure didn't mention working with the Democrats. He did mention that he and Mike Pence would do something. But basically, his whole speech was what he would do because he said he would do it. That may work when you own the company and can fire anyone who doesn't play along. That doesn't work in a representative government with a separation of powers.

 

Unilateral decision-making and unilateral implementation requires lots of authority. The dreaded executive order that O'Bama is fond of is one example. I am a limited government conservative. Can any of you Trump supporters show me what conservative principles Trump's promises line up with, either the proposals from his speech or any of his policies he talked about on the campaign trail leading up to last night? I would appreciate that because last night, Trump sounded like a big, authoritarian government guy, not a conservative. I realize that once I picked up on that tone I may have heard everything else he said through that filter. I need to read a transcript of his speech to digest what he said to see if I still have the same impression.

I asked somewhere earlier in this thread about messaging as well as the Latino/minority challenge for the party.

 

Last night's speech was really poor if messaging to undecideds/minorities is key.

 

It came across as "white people be afraid." Be afraid of the brown people roaming free in our streets. This entire speech was straight out of 1968.

 

Our streets are getting more dangerous, says Trump. He cherry-picked the data despite there being a long downward trend in all types of crime. He talked about illegal immigrants and crime. Yet despite illegal immigrants having tripled in the US the crime rate overall has gone down AND immigrants have a lower crime rate than "real Americans."

 

 

He talked about loving the gay community and wanting no harm to them (I believe he believes that) yet his platform wants to disallow gay marriage, reduce adoptions by gay couples, encourage minors into conversion therapy, and have a VP on the ticket who is openly hostile to gays. Message doesn't match the words.

 

He intentionally leaves out the "why" of the losing manufacturing jobs issue. Technology is a huge culprit and costs are another. Go to Detroit and see how few human hands are now involved in the making of a car.

 

Reducing taxes does not create jobs. We already have proof of that.

 

Tax Policy Center says that his tax plan could increase the national debt by nearly 80% of GDP by 2036 unless there are some huge spending cuts.

 

 

Be afraid of the refugees. They are simply walking right into our country. Fear. While we can all agree that the screening process can be better the implication that they are walking in is wrong. Average Syrian refugee waits 18 to 24 months to have the screening process completed.

 

No olive branch to the black community that is concerned about fairness. He could have supported the police while at the same time acknowledging that the issue needs to be looked into. Nothing.

 

The speech was great if your only thought is Anyone But HRC. If the goal was to feel "big tent -ish" and welcoming to all then it failed miserably.

I watch cnn probably more than fox just to hear how negative towards the right they are. I guess we all hear what we want to hear in the end.

That's not a plan; those are campaign promises. The plan would be to tell us how she's going to pay for all of that.

 

The classic move in politics, provide promises and only vague outlines of how you'll accomplish your goals, then when you get in office say "I had no idea all the issues involved and how bad the problem is so I'm unable to complete......"
