June 22, 201610 yr The Billy Joel in 200 years thread got me thinking...what do you think is the most recognizable song/artist over the past 100 years? I've included the artist in there, because you need to know not only the song itself, but who sings/sang it. This takes out songs like "Happy Birthday" or "Amazing Grace", that, while they may be recognized by a good portion of the population, they're not associated with any one particular singer. Current artists may be known OF by a lot of people...but, how many people 60+ could honestly identify a specific Taylor Swift or Katy Perry song? A co-worker and I were discussing this earlier today, and came up with a few possibilities. I'll post them later, as to not affect anybody else's thought process.
June 22, 201610 yr Author Just to clarify, what we were talking about at work, was the song/artist from the past 100 years that people would recognize TODAY. Not necessarily the one that was the most recognizable when it came out.

Our reasoning behind it was the fact that, even though it's a song that's 35+ years old, and by an artist that is probably identified with the older crowd (60+), a lot of younger people know it for one simple reason...New Year's Eve at Times Square.

Yeah, not concerned about which is the "better" song. We were thinking that if you played a song to the entire population of the US, which one would have the most people say "Hey, I know that song...it's ________ by ______."
