June 12, 201610 yr I speak as someone not familiar with the welfare system but is it possible to create a sort of sliding scale in terms of government assistance once you meet a certain threshold you get X assistance and once you meet the next lower threshold you get Y assistance? Or is this what we already have? I already know you get more help if you have more dependents/children in the household but that's about it. This is the major overhaul that is needed. SF friend is the type of person that needs the assistance. She is working and going to school to better herself. It's a temporary situation for her. Her sisters are the typical generational welfare types. My wife had a similar situation when she was a teen. Her Dad had two strokes which left him unable to work. Her Mom needed to stay home and care for him. They couldn't get any assistance due to the fact that they owned their own home. Ridiculous. This man was a decorated Marine. I do think that those receiving assistance and are able bodied should be required to do community service. They are getting money/SNAP from the government, they should have to do something in return.
June 12, 201610 yr I agree. We hear a lot more about the abuses but I suspect that it is a minority. I think there was and unbiased investigation, you would find it is probably about 50/50.

What about the working poor that already have jobs and receive aid?? And wouldn't making them do community service in return for receiving aid be a job, since you are performing a service in order to receive payment?? Are there enough community service postions to for these people to fill?? Who determines if a person is "able bodied" enough to perform this these "volunteer" positions. Who manages them?? I'm not saying it's not possible, but again, it's much more complicated than just saying "they must do community service"
June 12, 201610 yr It needs over hauled to help get people off of welfare and put to work. It needs to be eliminated for illegal immigrants. This may deter them from coming to "America, the home of the free, that is free food, housing.
June 12, 201610 yr It seems like it's a three pronged issue between the people, the businesses and the government. It would be great if the government could create stores ONLY for people needing assistance. As in, you could only use EBT. No cash. No card. These stores would then only sell food items with nutritional value. No beer/liquor/smokes. Then, once these stores are in place, merchants would not be able to accept EBT or food stamps. Those could only be used at government run stores. It seems like this would eliminate a certain degree of fraud, but obviously people would weasel what they could out of the system. I'll go back to living in the real world now, where the government wouldn't consider doing something rational like this.
June 12, 201610 yr It can't be eliminated or millions would starve including our farmers and food producers who depend heavily on the govt snap program. Overhauled to reduce fraud, I agree. There should be some accountability: stay off illegal drugs, keep your kids in school, actively be looking for a job, etc... Provide a little more for those working full time min wage jobs. But what about expanded? No one has touched on that, so I will. Last month the Swiss held a vote on Basic Income, or the idea that every citizen makes a basic wage. It failed miserably for several reasons, but it was voted on and I see it voted on again and again in the more progressive Euro nations. Switzerland's voters reject basic income plan - BBC News As technology advances at a rapid pace this subject will come up more and more.
June 12, 201610 yr Why don't we just call stores for the people on this the welfare store. Let the government run them and make it a non profit organization and get food from American farmers and use.

Let the government run them and make it a non profit organization and get food from American farmers and use. Not a bad idea on the surface but you would need around 20,000 maybe many more store locations across the country. Infrastructure and logistics of a program like that would cripple the US Budget.

Did you read my post above what you put in bold? If you did you would see where I stand. Able bodied means a doctor has not found you disabled. Pretty straight forward. It's not that complicated. It's those in charge that think like you that make it complicated. If you haven't been found disabled by a doctor and you are receiving welfare benefits, you must do community service. There are plenty of things that need to be done. Pick up trash on roadways, Mow the grass beside roadways, feed the needy at shelters, etc. Do something besides setting around playing your Xbox or watching Netflix.
June 12, 201610 yr I wish Donald Trump instead of of talking about deporting illegals, would focus on deporting all of these good for nothing Americans that have and will never hit a lick there whole lives. Can we get an island the size of a small country in the Pacific and just start transporting?

June 12, 201610 yr Disability, welfare , etc all need a major overhaul. Far too many people abuse it. I've heard of someone getting a check from the government every month because they can't read.

Can we get an island the size of a small country in the Pacific and just start transporting? That's one heck of an extreme. You're exiling children who have no control over their situation. I really don't want to derail this thread, but the disdain for the people who are struggling receiving social welfare is concerning IMO when we (the average taxpayer) spend much more on corporate welfare and it's never discussed.
