Jenna Martin Transferring To Highlands

No sour grapes' date=' you being a HHS fan I'm sure are very happy who wouldn't be, just stating it seems a little off wouldn't you at least agree. I wish her all the best just makes people wonder.[/quote'] Just day and age of the times. I can't speak to the specifics as I just don't know. For example, I had an opportunity to move to Union as I typically travel south. We would have moved into Cooper district as I have family in the area. I am sure Sullivan would have been very happy. We opted at this time to stay having another boy come through HHS.

Understand the day and age but if you read the rules the only way she can is if she moves into the district.

And even then, it must be a "bona fide" move ( see Mike Mitchell Case for the ramifications from a non-bona fide) AND the KHSAA can STILL deny the waiver. As I have said many times, I think many of the KHSAA bylaws are silly because they are largely unenforceable at this point, given their prior decisions and constitutional protections of due process. I am very surprised at the parties involved in this transfer, though, given the gamut of circumstances.

Not necessarily. The rules say you can become eligible if you change districts. It doesn't say you are only eligible if you attend the district where you moved. It just says, you can retain your eligibility (to go anywhere you'd like) as long as you have moved out of one district and into another.

For example, if you went to SK and moved to Alexandria. You could still go to Notre Dame. The move made you eligible. It doesn't mean the only place you would be eligible is at Campbell County high school or Brossart. The moved just made you eligible to not sit out a year. I think we all make the assumption that to be eligible you must play in the district you move to. That's not what the rule says specifically. It just says a bonafide move that crosses district lines.

Whether I believe or really even know the intent, that's how it's written and I can see why it's written that way for the scenario I stated. It's written for the real life examples that need exceptions to be allowable. However, that also means there are loopholes in the process.

I know that HHS is not accepting any out of district students so why is this different?

That's not true. They opened it up again last year.

What's ashamed IMO is that we all know why these things are happening and not only with this situation but with the situation that has come up with Holy Cross again this is my opinion. These kids aren't transferring for the education its to play a sport and yes they have that right but the way it is happening is wrong and if the KHSAA doesn't start cracking down it will get worse. The playing field is going to be and hasn't been and in my opinion the parents are to play. I hope I haven't spoke out of turn here but lets look at what is going on in our area its crazy to me.

Not when I called just this year.

There is a set of guidelines...the first one being what which class you're trying to get in and the number of students that are already in that class. Meaning...is that class at capacity. If so, then no dice. The other criteria is based on several other things that make up a formula, test scores, behavior history, attendance history, and possibly GPA and ACT if applicable. I'm just throwing these out off the top of my head. The criteria is out there somewhere. Basically, IF the class you are trying to get in is not at capacity, then they will accepts good smart kids.

Now that may change again. All the grade schools are being remodeled and in-larged and I believe some of the bigger high school classes ever have just graduated. So it wouldn't surprise me to see the criteria change again soon. That's complete speculation on my part though

Understand so basically the short version is that is up to their discretion. I am not being a smart you know what. The just said we are not accepting any.

Yes, you could put it that way. It would surprise me that the first question they didn't ask you was "What class is he/she in?". Because that's been what I've heard for anyone that has gotten in or tried to get in recently. I don't have the criteria at my finger tips, but it's posted out there somewhere. I have seen it.

Guess you can see why people think that they make those decisions based on an athlete who is good and wants to go and play there. Not saying its against the rules but the feeling a lot of people have.

I don't know your exact situation, but I could see how that could be a perception. However, I can give you countless examples of kids that are there and have come recently that don't play any sports or are far from being a star athlete. The athlete just gets the spotlight in these perceptions. I do know Martin is very smart and her scores are very good. (from what I've been told by reliable sources). So she may be an athlete, but she would also fit the other criteria in the formula.

Again, I have several examples of kids that did or didn't get in (athlete and non-athlete) and the first question they asked all of them was "what class?". Not "do you play sports". This includes my own son who plays sports, but is never gonna be an impact player and may not even make any high school teams. (he's a brainiac and not obsessed with sports). I tried for years to get him in and I coach there, have plenty of relationships and have generations of family that went there. Heck, I know teachers that teach in the district that live outside of Ft Thomas that are on a waiting list because their kid is in a class that is at capacity right now. I can promise you that education is first and foremost and protecting the kids they already have (over crowded schools) is their number one priority. Coaches don't even talk to kids until they are enrolled, so I'm not sure how the administration office would even know if a kid is an athlete or not.

I can also tell you that I coach. And I constantly hear rumors that kids are transferring to HHS to play in the program I coach. Yet in 4 years, other than Spencer coming my first year when she was a freshman (which I find hard to believe that was for sports, we were 10-19 the year before she came and her dad is an alum), I haven't seen any of the kids I've heard about show up on my doorstep.

I love your loyalty to your school I really do but you can't tell me in every case that an administrator doesn't know if a kid is a good athlete or not. As for a coach not talking to a player well I'll leave that alone because I know better and have facts on that.

Oh come on, we hear that all the time. Share your "facts"
