The opportunity to get live reps without worrying about a game, and the extra teaching of fundamentals, make spring practice valuable. I do agree that spring sports should be the first priority. We had several guys make it to about 6 spring practices that were also part of our state champion track team. We do our spring ball immediately after basketball to get those guys back to track ASAP and allow some time in case they do get banged up a little. We had guys come to spring football and then win an individual state title in track. We will always do spring football immediately after basketball.

Leave it as is. We all have the flexibility to make it work for us as individual schools as it is now. So it should work out for all involved and for any school that chooses not to have it. We use it to work fundamentals. Strong fundamentals equals safety in my opinion.

I'm against spring football for selfish reasons. I really like AAU basketball and baseball. I'm not in favor of forcing a kid out of the big 3 sports into a single, year round, sport.

Isn't that what AAU, summer and fall ball do for baseball and basketball????

It helps those who were freshman last fall see where they are for the upcoming season as sophomores. They want to compete for a job and they want to know what it will be like playing against seniors. They get a taste in spring football. Good motivation for them.

This is in addition to the positives that come from getting a team together and actually playing their sport. Gives the players and coaches a good look at the team prior to summer practice.

For with limited contact. I'm more in favor of no football in June as it creates a problem for football with basketball still going on. Start up right after 4th of July.

So basketball gets to practice and play games in the summer but football can't? Let's not equate spring football with summer basketball because they are not equal.

Put it this way if basketball got ten off season practices with no scrimmages against other teams this state would be up in arms.

Well you certainly didn't take the time to dissect the post. Had you done so you would have clearly seen I was referring to two separate issues. 1) I stated how I voted ie. For with limited contact THEN 2) Stated that I would be in favor of starting football in July so basketball can do their TEAM thing thus not posing stress on players that do both sports. Fail to see where I equated one to the other and for the record I am a strictly football guy!

No need to slow down. You're suggesting that basketball gets off season practice and games and football loses June workouts and limits their spring to less contact. That's ridiculous and unfair.

I read both and disagree on both.

1. You only have 2 weeks of contact practice before your scrimmage so added contact practices in the spring can help teams work on the fundamentals as well as getting younger players use to the speed of varsity players.

2. June is the open month of the year for all sports. July for football is like November for basketball. It is your preseason practice time.

No problem with your disagreement and I respect your opinion. However, my opinion is that yes, teams can go full pads for those 10 practices in late April/May but then they don't see any contact again for they next 2-3 months until August correct? Your analogy of speed and timing works assuming you have all your varsity players there as many varsity players (the one's that will truly be playing on Friday nights) could be playing baseball or running track. I'm not against spring ball at all just fail to see the point if a team is in full pads which is why I voted limited contact (ie. shells) but you certainly get the opportunity to install quite a bit in those 10 days so there is benefit.

Again, since you are not well-versed in reading my mind, I am not supporting football losing anything as my preference would be it be STRICTLY football from June forward. My point only is if 2-sport athletes were going to have to go back and forth between basketball or baseball and football a possible option would be to give the other sports the first 3 weeks of June and make the last two weeks the dead and start football right after the 4th of July shortening the dead period by a week. I know of several schools that put the multi sport in a awkward position with coaches want "their guys" at "their sport" which was my only point. Not to mention June is football camp month and would free kids to do that without having to get permission to go to camps.

I'm against spring football like I'm against summer basketball and fall baseball.

The kids need a break from those particular sports. For football players - winter and spring should be a time of rest or a chance to play another sport. For basketball players - spring and summer should be a time of rest or a chance to play another sport. For baseball players - late summer, fall and early winter should a time of rest or a chance to play another sport.

When I say rest, let the kids be kids. Let them go play pickup basketball, grab a whiffle bat and play whiffle ball, go swimming, go bike riding, and if they want, let them play video games.

Mid July approaches in a hurry for football players as does mid October for basketball and mid February for baseball.

I'm not a fan of the AAU culture or the spring football culture. The players today aren't any better than 50 years ago. And, those guys didn't have spring football or the AAU circuit.

Why is it that one of the big arguments for virtually everyone making the playoffs is: that one additional week of practice is important. But, for spring football the argument against it is: one week doesn't make a difference?
