Sometimes people lose at things. That is the nature of competition. I think 3 classes produces the most competitive, fun to watch playoff system, while also minimizing travel, and scheduling issues. Based on your logic, we should have an indefinite number of classes so everyone can be a winner.

 

You're putting words in my mouth. Never said we should have infinite classes. I do think 6 may be too many. In my mind 5 is better. And while I agree it's competition, and there will always be losers, I don't see the need to force teams into situations where there is no way they will ever be able to compete at the highest level. While I wouldn't be against a revision to fewer classes, I feel like 3 classes swings things too far in the other direction.

Fair enough. Classes based on standard deviations or a percentage away from the mean enrollment in the class could be interesting.

That would be horrible for a small school who was senior heavy when they won their title then got moved up in class.

I don't like the fact that it takes any independence from the schools when it comes to their schedules.

I like that idea, but with the lack of 5A and 6A schools in Eastern Kentucky, Belfry would be traveling to Lexington every week to play in a 6A District or to the Somerset area to play in a 5A District...if they got bumped up.

I agree. You'd at least have to say you have to win 2 in 4 years or something like that to avoid this situation. At the same time, how many times has a small, senior heavy school come out of nowhere to win a state championship in Ky? It's usually the same 6 teams every year. Maybe an exception could be made for class 1A schools.

Wouldn't Belfry just bump into the 4a class with Clay County? Your point is still valid though. Could you keep them in their current class district in regular season and then put them in the higher class just for the playoffs? That might cause issues.

The way KY is set up I think it would cause district scheduling problems dorm teams moving up and down. Moving classes would require a completely new district schedule every year, And would be especially problematic when moving to a district with different numbers of teams. It may also creat geographical and travel problems.

Four classes, and keep the privates in their own class, one class for big, one for small.

I'd agree with that if independents are in that class too. They have many of the advantages the privates enjoy but don't have to charge the huge tuition privates do.

I love the three class idea.

 

I love it a little less when I see CovCath in the same division at T/X/H though.

They'd also have Cooper, Ryle, and Simon Kenton in district. Based on that, I doubt they'd get to play X/T/Male.

 

Here's how it looks with around 16 districts per class rather than 8. This should help alleviate the concern about schools being able to schedule tougher or weaker opponents as they desire. The school cut off at the bottom is Somerset.
