July 15, 201610 yr I was just coming here to post this. Dude brings it. Scientists have determined that Nolan Ryan holds the record for fastest pitch ever at about 108.5 against the Mariners. How did they determine 108.5?
July 15, 201610 yr How did they determine 108.5? I just did a quick search and found a message board where someone talked about how Ryan's pitch was "clocked" at 101.9 or something when it reached the plate. The idea is that if it was clocked in today's world with a modern radar gun it would've been clocked coming out of his hand which would've been before it slowed down to 101.9.
July 15, 201610 yr Author How did they determine 108.5? Check out "Fastball" on Netflix. In today's world the gun starts timing at 50 feet from the plate. When Nolan threw his pitch against the Mariners I think it was clocked about about 100 or 101. Difference is that the gun didn't pick it up until about 30 feet from the plate. Science says the ball slows down as it gets to the plate so it's faster at 50 than it is at 30. Scientists were then able to do geeky science calculations and determine that it was about 108.
July 18, 201610 yr The game after DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak came to an end he started another 16-game streak. I read that last night, and had probably heard it before, but a hit in 72/73 games is absurd.
