Jeff Honeycutt is trying to get the job again. Rod Rhodes replaced Honeycutt.

 

Rhodes replaced Denny Fugate.

 

Honeycutt was successful there before. Never understood why he left.

Not sure he will get anywhere with a lawyer. Coaching is a year to year job.

I agree. I don't see where he has a case because coaching jobs are year to year contracts. He might be trying to go the racial discrimination angle but I doubt that will get any traction.

 

I was told by a person in the Hazard area that the the cut in his pay was due to his program running in the red and the thought was to use the money cut from Rhodes' salary to pay on an assistants salary. He was upset and voiced his opinion to the principal who then forwarded the info on to the superintendent and the board.

I don't know, that's just the term this guy used. I suppose it might be considered spending more on the team than the budget limits allowed, but that doesn't make sense either because everything spent has to be signed and approved by the principal.

I think that was part of the issue. Rhodes didn't get a PO for something on one of the trips and school wouldn't pay it.

With all that's gone on out there the past 4 or so years, them being on probation the past 2 years...is this really a surprise to anyone? Now, maybe the mechanism/reason behind the decision might be odd and not necessarily due to the probation/troubles Cordia has encountered in recent past. Or could be a cumulative effect type situation where this last "confrontation" over pay was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. Who knows.

 

What will really be interesting is to see who goes after this job and will all the players/talent who are there now be there come October.

All the talent I don't see staying. Rhodes is the guardian over some of them.

Cordia has an unusual situation whereas they are part public and part private. The school is leased by the Knott County system but is privately owned. Knott County pays the teachers and administrators but the school facilities are part of the Lotts Creek Community system. I'm not sure if there's another school in the state set up that way.

I'm sure Alice Whitaker, who has a lot of clout (and money) with Cordia, has butted heads with the county system in the past. The Cordia community is pretty loyal to their school. However, I don't know how supportive they are of Rhodes. I'm sure they're not going to go private anytime soon over the Knott County decision not to rehire the coach.

The Corida/Knott situation intrigues me, because it is private, but it is public.

 

Where have the gotten their money? I know it's been in existence for 80+ years, but for such as rural and remote area, it is just interesting.

Agree with the prior post - I find Cordia very intriguing, not just the basketball aspect but the school and its history. It seems very unique.

I think the main reason that consolidation with Knott Central has not been implemented is the distance factor. Cordia is 24 miles from KCC. It's actually much closer to Hazard High and Perry Central, about 10 miles, but of course not in the same county. The school has a Hazard address.

Sadly, when one does a Google search, it's hard to get a lot of information on Cordia School itself. I'm not talking about the recent KHSAA stuff either.

One day while in Hazard with some time on my hands I drove out to Lotts Creek to take a look at Cordia. It is an interesting place. I had planned to go to a game there next year (assuming they were back playing their games at Cordia), but I don't know about that now.
