Pitchers are investments to the owners and the fact that baseball is obsessed with numbers, is the reason for pitch counts.

When did the 100 pitch count theory start? I'm in my mid-30's so I wasn't around when it was common place to have 4-man rotations. It just seems like there are more arm injuries now than there was when I was a kid

Arm injuries have been part of baseball since the beginning of the sport. The difference now is guys are often able to come back from them. Before rotator cuff repairs and Tommy John surgery became really effective in the last 20-30 years, guys just disappeared because of "dead arms".

There are several reasons why there are more injuries nowadays. 1st, with advanced detection methods (specifically MRI's), we are better at finding and diagnosing problems. 2nd, with the addition of 10 teams since 1969, there are simply more pitchers. 3rd, pitchers are throwing harder than ever, which naturally puts more stress on arms. And finally, with specialization, the rise of youth travel and fall ball, pitchers have more miles on their arms when they reach the majors.

Yes pitch counts can seem to be somewhat arbitrary. But as someone mentioned, 10-20 extra pitches after 100, is 10-20% of the total workload. And when your already fatigued, that can be significant. I get it....a no hitter can be significant. But on the other hand, I'm willing to bet most people couldn't name half of the guys that have thrown the last 10 no hitters. With the money these guys make, it's much better to be safe than sorry. Pulling the guy was the right call.

Just for clarification, I can't name 10 baseball players.

His coach should be fired. That's reckless.

Ridiculous.

More reported injuries I'm sure, plus with the internet you can see every little tinge in a pitcher's arm reported if you're into that sort of thing.
