In the fall, I posted a run down of the fifty greatest high school football programs in Kentucky history. The rankings were compiled through a formula that awarded points for various achievements. Tonight we will unveil a list for the greatest basketball programs in Kentucky history. Like football, basketball also has a points formula. Teams are credited with district championships (dating back to 1927), regional championships (also dating to 1927), state tournament wins (dating to 1918), and state championships won. (District and region championships date to 1927 because the postseason format has remained almost unchanged since then).

The formula certainly isn't perfect and you may disagree with the rankings. That's fine! In case of ties, the team with the most state championships gets the better ranking. If that number is the same, I added the total number of district, region, and state championships together and the highest number gets the better ranking.

I'm putting out the rankings over a four day period. Check back each day this week for an update.

Great thread!

Very cool. Surprised to see Hoptown already but I guess they got most of their Sweet 16 wins in the last decade.

Thanks for this gchs!!!!!! I'm geeked!!!

What's up with the Hazel numbers?

Yikes. I messed up. It's too late to edit, but if someone with more skill or access than me would like to go in and fix it, I would appreciate it.

I got ya!

The fact that CovCath makes number 35 after having the majority of their success in the past 4 years really does make me wonder where South Oldham might end up, if at all.

Covington Catholic won five straight regional titles and was state runner-up in the late-1960s.

Looks like points are 1 pt for dist champ, 2 points for regional, 3 points for each state tourney win and 5 for state championship.

What's the points for each category?

It looks to be:

District Championships: 1 point per win

Region Championships: 2 points per win

State Tournament Game Wins: 3 points per win

State Championships: 5 points per win

You do know that were going to need the bottom 25 or so as well, right?

Interesting. How many points did Trinity have and how far were they from the cut-off?

...make me wonder where South Oldham might end up, if at all.

165th place

4 district titles, 3 regions, 1 win at the state
