Does Trump's four bankruptcies in his company really bother you?

 

If you could put everything else aside that people complain about in regards to Trump, would they bother you and keep you from voting him?

 

People continually bring them up on these threads, on Facebook, and they are often mentioned by the other candidates as a reason that he wouldn't be a Presidential candidate...so I am curious are they really that big of a deal to you and would prevent you from voting for him?

About the only thing about him that doesn't bother me.

For a guy that claims to be a winner, he sure does lose a lot.

If I'm being honest, I think his bankruptcies are a terrible thing to use as a reason against Trump and shouldn't be a talking point.

 

If I acted like it bothered me, I would be a major hypocrite. As the President of my Fraternity, I tried to find any loophole, work around and etc. that I could to advance my Fraternity, especially when it came to recruitment. If they didn't have a rule for it, and we thought it would benefit our organization, we did it. Now you better believe that our council would have new rules the next summer to prevent us from doing it again. It helped make my organization stronger, putting us ahead of the others and by far the best in regards to Size, Athletics, Power Positions on Campus, and Social Preference (subjective of course but come on, we all know haha).

 

So I can't hate on a businessman for taking advantage of the holes in the tax law to benefit his company. In my opinion, it really shouldn't even be a talking point. Just something I think about when I see people mention it all the time.

Declaring bankruptcy isn't always losing...in the long game.

Bankruptcies are a common enough occurrence that I think people understand them as a business maneuver and not necessarily an indication of complete failure.

 

The various lawsuits he's endured ought to be more troubling, like the one over Trump University.

You would think, or maybe I just have a lot of dumb friends because I constantly see it used against him. Probably mainly because Rubio keeps throwing it out at debates.

Rubio is not the person that should be throwing stones here. He's had his own questionable ethics related to the Corinthian Colleges.

Bankruptcy is theft!

You over spent, lived outside of your means or committed to something you could not pay back.

Someone got cheated out of money because of your bad decisions or lack of sight into the future.

Like so many other things, it isn't exactly black and white. Admittedly, my disdain for the man in so many other respects might potentially cloud my judgment of any individual piece of the Donald. I fully understand bankruptcy can be the best option for many organizations and completely legal, but it doesn't mean that each instance has to sit well with me. While the bankruptcies are low on my list of marks against Trump, there are three main reasons why I find them problematic.

 

1) A bankruptcy is an entirely different animal than a loophole. This isn't taking action because there are a list of rules that say what someone has to pay (like with the IRC), but in his particular business world it is him using others' money to build, then when it doesn't work out as intended telling his creditors he will pay pennies on the dollar. Sure these arrangements are freely contracted for, but when individuals and corporations are big enough, when there isn't backlash to one's brand or future business dealings, the act of filing for bankruptcy is a get out of jail free card. Sure you lose something, but by insulating yourself, you're really screwing the other party.

 

2) I don't know the exact number, but Trump's various companies have filed multiple times. Of course one can argue that people should know better than to do business in the future, but bankruptcy should generally be a last resort as opposed to a tool or a weapon. This is legal, so good for him for doing what he wants to get ahead, but that doesn't mean I don't get to hold it against him.

 

3) Each company that has filed for bankruptcy is a loser. In a campaign devoid of actual policy it seems hypocritical to endlessly preach winning with a closet full of losses.

Our system of bankruptcy is the envy of the western world. Personal bankruptcy is difficult and expensive to accomplish, at least following the 2005 reforms. Business bankruptcy is one of the things that make entrepreneurship possible. Who would ever start a small business knowing that if it didn't work out, they'd be on the hook for any of those debts the rest of their lives?

I voted no, because there are about a 1,000 other reasons I'd never vote for him before that...

One bankruptcy is one thing. Four bankruptcies, though?

 

This issue is one of the primary reasons I won't vote for him.
