It's pure political and if a coach isn't liked he nor his player with get POY or COY award. Many Coaches will plot together if they feel a coach is running up the score, or getting a lot of transfers.

 

Coaches plotting with each other against other coaches and players, are you kidding...Is there some politics-yes...but I don't believe for one minute there's some covert plotting of votes.

Subjective voting is what it is and there is always going to be a well deserving player or coach not receive this award in some region.

I think the KABC by and large does a pretty good job of trying to honor the players and coaches of our Commonwealth

The threatening balance of power with your own kids is what people are after. What is wrong with developing your middle school kids and your younger kids at the elementary level? The Mercer County girls are good at doing those things. Coach Cook is a Happy Osborne disciple, one of the reasons why he gets kids continuously, and two of his assistants were with Happy at Montgomery County. I know that Coach Cook knows the game well and does a great job, not arguing that. However I am yet to see him coach his own kids that he has developed through the years. The 2 coaches that do that the best in the region are Jeff Jackson and Rodney Woods. It is hard to take a group of kids that have not played together before and win like Mercer County has this year, its just hard to root for them. Trust me they are doing what other teams are doing all around them, they are just better at it. That doesn't make it right. I wished they would do away with the COY award and make it about the kids in general anyway. In our region the top 3 teams are South Oldham , Owen and Oldham, they have (1) transfer between them 3. Not a lot of transfers in the 8th region, and I am proud of that fact.

Each of those 10 teams will have starters that weren't there in middle school. And if you look back one more year, you can add Lincoln and East to that mix. So will it be KSD, Mcreary Central, Garrard or Somerset?

And that transfer came into Owen County and has had a positive impact on their success this year. I guess that is why the Owen County coach didn't get COY, huh?

What's even more ironic is that if Mercer County still had Coach Britt as a coach Malik Dow would still be at Mercer County right now and everyone also knows that Dylan James and his brother are likely headed back to Martin County because their dad got the job he wanted in the first place. I was told that Cook and Happy had no overlap at Montgomery. Cook came in the following year.

I knew when I posted it would take a lot of heat, just facts, yes Owen got (1) kid in the history of their school. Did Lawrence County get about 2-3 kids when Cook was there? I believe so. Yes if Britt was at Mercer you would not have got Bell from Butler to Boyle either though. I am not for anyone in the 12th as I am called 8th region warrior. I just know that it seems like a mini-Louisville or Lexington anymore with transfers. You can not get on here without reading something about who is getting someone etc in the 12th. If coaches and community's are fine with it I guess doesn't really bother us here in the 8th region. Back to the original discussion, I am voting for coaches that have done it the right way in my eyes if I had a vote, which obviously different than some of your's. The difference in transfers in my opinion and this will hurt some feelings, is did the coach or coaches go after a kid or did they end up there on his own accord? Everyone gets a transfer every now and then, the BIG question is how?

I really like the comment that some schools just end up with players while other schools recruit them. There must be some inside scoop that he has that we don't know about. Like the one he had on Jeremiah.

 

All I can say with any degree of certainty is that I know the reasons as to how the two transfers ended up at Mercer. And I can assure you that neither were because of Coach Cook recruiting those kids. Both were due to personal cirumstances.

Coach Hicks got robbed. He has a team full of freshmen and sophmores and led them to a 26-4 record while playing in the 11th region. How he wasn't named 11th region coach of the year is absurd.

What more could Sullivan at Cooper do to win this? Has had a banner year, even missing more than a few games with his go-to kid.

Rockcastle coach gets COY but can't even win his district? Smh
