Honestly, over all, I would say the 9th is down this year. SK is 10-1 vs the 9th. I don't believe it would be a problem at all.

The 9th is down? Ryle has 2nd toughest schedule in state with 6 losses to top 20 teams...Holmes is rolling..Holly Cross took Holmes to double OT..it took a phenomenal shot at the buzzer for SK to beat HHS..NDA, NCC, Conner can compete when they're on and lil Beechwood has been very competitive barely loosing to Mason. Better to say SK is really good this year. Whoever comes out of the 9th will make big noise at state.

They've done that for about 3 years now. Their thought process is, with their shooting percentage (very good) and the chance/temptation to foul or pick up fouls vs the amount of times you actually get a rebound on a free throw, they feel it's not worth it in the long run and they choose not to have players on the line.

 

They DO NOT like to have other teams shoot free throws. They work very hard on proper defense and playing good defense without fouling. You'll rarely see them pick up fouls away from the basket. You will never see them reach in traps. They do other things like not putting people on the line to minimize the opportunities to foul, and sometimes you'll even see them not contest a layup if they know they've been beat or if a girl is driving hard. They want to put the pressure on the girl to actually "finish" in traffic rather than bail them out. That's why some were saying they could hear the coaches screaming "don't foul Neice!" Because they want to make her finish and they don't want to give up 3 point plays. They do that a lot on kids that "get to the basket" and try to draw fouls as part of their game. Late in the game if the kid has proven she can finish in contact, they will play more physical and not worry so much about the fouls. Highlands teams are very disciplined and smart.

 

I know that was a little more long-winded than you were expecting, but it's all related.

I get all that, in your other post, during the course of the game. Just seemed odd in that situation. Wasn't there, only saw the video posted & that jumped out to me more than the shot.

You're right. The staff felt there was no way she'd miss. She is a very good and clutch shooter. But I still agree that's a little ballsy!!

Which 4 teams in the 9th would you rate over SK? Evidently the folks you state provide the most accurate rankings, disagree with you.

At the beginning of the year, or even 2 weeks past Christmas , I would have agreed with you. Not now though. SK took the foot off the pedal too early in this game. HHS was DOMINATED for 3 quarters. Its a mistake they will not repeat.

Well Ryle beat them, Holmes beat Ryle and SK didn't play Holmes. And it took a last second miracle shot to beat HHS on your home court in front of a large crowd on senior night. So I'd call them pretty even. You can make all the excuses you want, but my guess is that HHS may play SK differently as well next time and you said yourself, they had a game the night before and probably didn't game plan much for SK. And they always play 4 qtrs in Bball. SK dominated for 3 qtrs and it only took HHS to dominate for one to lose at the buzzer on a miracle shot. So yes, 3-4 in the 9th.

 

If you don't think HHS is comparable or even better, just look at "like" opponents scores.

Yes. But most recently Campbell county beat Ryle who barely beat Sk in the opening game at Ryle. SK beat Campbell county at Campbell so that must make them even or better than Ryle now? Lol. This could go on all day

 

SK and highlands aren't on same playing level. Highlands is very good and can make some noise in the 9th but I think if you were at the game you would say the same. In fact, several coaches I guess scouting agreed with that assessment. SK clearly started holding the ball to soon and were focused on getting a milestone out of the way. All of that factored into a terrific comeback for Highlamds and in the end probably deserved to win. However, if SK kept their foot on the peddle then it wouldn't have come to what it did

That said, I'm grateful it did because I think SK learned from their late game mistakes and hopefully will not have a repeat. They nearly did the same thing against Campbell cnty. They had a large late lead and started holding the ball which allowed Campbell to threaten to get back in it late. Difference was Highlamds made plays down the stretch and Campbell didn't

Wasn't at the game. And they may have easily blown them out. But they didn't. Any team that is susceptible to giving up a 17 point lead in the 4th Qtr (regardless of the situation) is very vulnerable. What if HHS would have pressed the entire game the way they did in the 4th? Again, HHS would most likely play different too.

And did you look at the other scores of like opponents. I know we can do this all day. But don't act like SK is on another level. That's just silly. If you took the names off the schedules and I showed you the results, you'd say they are pretty darn close. Only difference is one school has two losses on their schedule they wish they could get back.

 

Make your case as to why you think they aren't on the same level. I'd like to hear it. I make my own judgments on teams. SK is very good, but not a different level.

RCC9, you talk about how discipline HHS is and how well they play defense and that they don't reach when they trap. It sounds to me as if by what you are saying that they shouldn't lose a game, I know you truly don't mean that but if they are that good on defense why was SK up by 20, defense wins games and there loses come against good teams, it seems to me they can't beat good teams consistently. I get injuries, not having a gym for a certain amount of time but at this stage of the year none of that should even factor in. This is just my observation.
