In 1972 the US lost to the USSR national basketball team 51-50, after the clock was reset twice. Was this a fair loss, or was the US cheated? Try to be as honest and unbias as possible.

The obvious answer for those of us who watched it is a resounding yes. I never understood the logic of the refs or timer who allowed the shenanigans to prevail in that game.

Because of the political climate in 1972 and the animosity between the USA and the USSR, I am sure lots of backdoor plays were going on we never saw (in the officials rooms, Olympic and basketball) on the court. Now give the devils their due, it took a full court pass and catch (poorly defended by the USA) to pull it off. But no question this is another example of corruption in sports, especially in the Olympic. When I think of Seph Blatter and FIFA, I for some reason picture the cheating of the 1972 Gold Medal for some reason. And I hate soccer. HAHA

If I remember right, did the USA players not accept their medals after the game in protest? Or was it just some of them? I know Doug Collins was one of the players who was irate.

They refused the medal.

Four years later in Montreal, we all wanted a rematch. But the USSR was upset by Yugoslavia in the semifinals and the USA defeated Yugoslavia for the gold.

I then recall in 1980 the USA boycotted the Olympics for political reasons, and the USSR returned the favor in Los Angeles in 1984.

A few have said they would accept. IOC says it must be unanimous.

I'd say a few rubles changed hands in 1972 after the outcome. The IOC is such a dirty organization. But, I also thought the USA choosing poor old Hank Iba to be the coach in that Olympics contributed to the struggles against the USSR. Iba was a great coach, but it sounded like his style played right into the USSR's hands. The USSR had great height but little quickness. A slow game helped them out in this outcome I believe.

The vote approving the questionable decision and the final score was 3-2. All three of the votes approving it were from communist countries. The votes against the score were not. Ain't that convenient?

How many chances can a team get to win?

The answer is 3.

Where does one start?

USSR given a timeout after Collins made the Free Throws and had inbounded the ball. Under International rules a team couldn't take a time out after a made FT.

Then Jones (BBAll President) comes onto the court and demands that 3 seconds be put back on the scoreboard. He had no authority by rule at that game.

Then the horn goes off on the play and it appears over.

Nope. Gonna play it again.

On that play McMillan is told to back away from the throw in pass by the official. So he has a clear pass to the other end.

A pure robbery of a game.

Only way that I would've known about this story, before this thread, was a 30 for 30 ESPN short that they did. I found it very interesting. If I remember right, it didn't air on TV, but just on their website at one point.

All sounded very bogus and a lot of the guys still sounded extremely bitter and I don't blame them.

I read an article year's ago that one of them had put it in his will that his family can never accept the silver medal for him.
