Mythical Champions:Prior to 1959, I have the following based on Courier-Journal's published use of the Litkenhous ratings.

 

All were considered one class. Louisville Central, old Lexington Dunbar, Henderson Douglass, Paris Western....became members in good standing of the KHSAA in 1958. 111 schools were listed in 1956. 140+ in 1958. If anyone has more information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Was there any before 1949?

I have Highlands being named the state champion in 1957, after beating Danvile in the Rotary Bowl. They lost to Flaget in the 1958 Rotary Bowl and so were state runner-up.

 

I have HHS losing in 1950 to St. X 20-13 in the Shrine Bowl. But then it goes on to say that the Birds received the top rating in the state that year.

Highlands beat Ashland 19 - 0 in 1943 to become Mythical State Champs.

I'm pretty sure Paducah Tilghman was atop the final 1947 Litratings.

HHS lost the North-South Championship to Glasgow in 1929.

Whatever happened to Flaget High?

Closed sometime in the early 70s, I think.

Does anyone have more information on Highlands' 1943 season (schedule and scores)?

Interestingly enough I think they won a state title in their last year of existence too.

 

Flaget closed after the 1973 season. They tied Thomas Jefferson High School for the Class AAA state title in 1971. Flaget finished 6-4 in 1972 and 3-7 in 1973, the final year of football. Neither squad made the playoffs.

The CJ had a computer to the Lit ratings in the late 40's and 50's...? It must have been a little different format than what is used today... I understand that it is a computer based modual which determines the rankings based off of specific input from state teams scores and games etc... They may call it the LITkenhouse ratings in the 40's and 50's, but its not the same sysems used today.... Please correct me if Im wrong.

Actually, the Litkenhous Ratings are based on mathematical formulas ... back in the day, I assume Dr. Litkenhous did them by hand. Now, I suspect, the C-J can just enter each team's scores on a spreadsheet and watch it crank out the ratings.

 

From what I'm told, the formula is essentially unchanged since its inception.

Were those "state titles" actually recognized by a neutral party? Or did Ashland go undefeated those years and simply proclaim themselves as such?
