I believe everyone is ranking Bell too low. I think you could bump Bell up 3 more spots IMO. Bell is going to be very tough to beat come November!!

Given their respective performances against St. Xavier and the fact that Bowling Green was missing a key player or two (or three) in that game, how does Highlands rate above the Purples?

 

1. Bowling Green's last two opponents were Warren Central and Logan County... Those don't exactly help out their rankings too much.

 

2. Highlands was missing their younger stud runningback (Conners) the last two weeks which would have allowed them to go to a two back set, which not only gives them more options, but it also would have given Jordan Kramer a break from running the ball every other play. But I wasn't going to put it out there because teams are missing a few big players due to injuries every game, but not being injury proned is apart of being a good team.

 

3. Highlands schedules the best teams possible so that even if they lose, they will still be ranked high (and to be as good as possible at the end of the season).

Warren Central was a 4A semifinalist last year, not to mention a consensus top-10 team until this week.

 

In any case, I'm referring to the St. Xavier games. Bowling Green, without its starting QB and a starting OL, lost to the Tigers 15-7. St. Xavier beat Highlands by two touchdowns.

I dont think that right now there is a team in 3A that can touch Highlands. After seeing how explosive that offense was, Id have them ranked #1 even after 2 straight loses.

Defense counts, too. Bowling Green held St. Xavier to 15 points without the benefit of an offense that could play ball-control and keep Vic Anderson and Co. off the field. The Tigers put up 35 on Highlands.

happened to watch the x vs bg game live. the x team playing that night did not look anything like the team that played against hhs. st. x had numerous drive stalling penalties, critical turnovers and looked very sluggish in general against bg. bg had one scoring drive of less than 10 yards after a st. x fumble inside the 10. otherwise bg's longest play from scrimmage (20yds) was on a bothched punt with the kicker running for his life. st. x played nearly a perfect game against hhs with no to's and very few significant penalties. even though the margin of victory was less against bg, i feel hhs gave st.x a much tougher test. I think hhs actually had over 300 yds total offense. after seeing both teams play in the past few weeks i think hhs has the stronger and more balanced team and will only get better with a much more difficult remaing schedule. vote hhs #1 for me!

The flip side of that argument is BG played the worst game they have played to date without 3 of their best offensive players. Sluggish or not, Victor Anderson had 16 carries and about 70 yds against the Purples. He has lit up everyone else on the schedule. BG and Highlands can settle it the first Friday in December if they are both lucky enough to get there.

I seem in one poll that Central was no. 2 in 3A, did anyone see that?

Well that is true but dont you think that part of Bowling Greens defensive success against St. X could have been because it was the first game of the season. Many offense's are not at a 100% in the first game. I believe that Bowling Green is a very solid team but i dont think that they are a better team than Highlands.

Gee, it was Bowling Green's first game, too. It wasn't like they were in midseason form and St. Xavier was taking the field for the first time.

 

I'm not saying the Purples are better than Highlands, but the way they played against St. Xavier (while shorthanded) puts the issue in doubt.

IMO, at this point I would rank them this way:

1) Bowling Green

2) Highlands

3) Central

4) Cov Catholic

5) Bell Co

6) Lex Catholic

7) Johnson Central

8) Franklin Co.

9) Rockcastle Co.

10) Bullitt East

Something to remember...with BG's injuries, it completely changed the complexity of their game. Injured were starting QB, star RB and starting center....WR had to fill in for QB which left his position open as well. Players had to adjust and do so quickly in preparation for 3 tough teams--St X, Christian Co & Warren Central. The players had to go back to different offense and IMO, they rose to the challenge. Offensively it was a struggle but the defense prevailed in the St X & Christian Co games. Both are VERY talented teams and I am proud of how the Purples responded. I agree Highlands is very impressive, but BG will improve as the season progresses with these players back. Best of luck to Highlands this season. Hopefully we can meet again at state.
