I guess I fail to understand how beating Ludlow and a 24-point loss to Beechwood automatically made Fairview one of the top five or six teams in Class A.

I understand the point ... it's your examples that were badly flawed.

 

In the preseason, last year's results are fairly relevant ... it's not necessarily the main point of emphasis, but it is something to consider.

How do you have any idea how I perceive it? Matney is a proven coach and Johnson Central seems to be a program on the rise. My only point is that the program needs a signature win, of sorts, to signal its arrival. You seem to take it more personally than that.

Nothing wrong with the examples that I provided and I don't recall any "signature win" in 1996 foreshadowing Bourbon County's AA state title the following season. Hilton brought a new attitude to the Bourbon County program (one that seems to have left with him) just as Matney brought renewed optimism to JC's program.

Bullitt East would certainly need to drop out after losing to a Nelson County team that, while probably improved, was horrible last year.

 

Southwestern, on the other hand, had only a three-point loss at Danville. Hardly catastrophic.

Nobody in 3A will touch Highlands. Solid everywhere.

If Lex Cath's line improves all year then that will be another great game. Across the board their skill kids could hang with anybody in any class IMO.

Cov Cath will also be a great matchup. It's early so injuries etc could play a role for any of the big teams.

Right now I think Cov Cath, Highlands and Lex Cath are the top 3.

Bowling Green has some amazing athletes but they are going to have to prove some stuff on offense when they get their horses back.

Rockcastle was around #4 in my mind but they struggled pretty bad on offense this week too.

Johnson Central and Pulaski SW are my darkhorses to knock off some big teams.

Don't know much about Lex Cath but after seeing Highlands Friday it's hard to see many teams that can match up. I hate to say that because I'm not a HHS fan but they are tough.

I agree about BG. It will be interesting to see how Lex Cath and Highlands matchup with St X the next couple of weeks and then maybe we'll have a good measuring stick for some of the contenders in 3A.

Johnson Central has the same number of playoff wins this season as every other team in Kentucky.

 

You are correct that JC was upset in the first round last season, but the district's third place team, which both Ashland and JC handled fairly easily, came very close to sending Rockcastle Country home in the same round.

 

I think that Johnson Central is going to surprise a lot of people this season, but I expect to hear the naysayers point out last season's first round loss ad nauseum. Johnson Central has not reached the point of reloading each season yet, but the rebuilding that began when Jim Matney stepped on campus is coming along quite well. Don't be shocked if you see the Golden Eagles lined up to play Rockcastle in the regional finals this season.

 

As for the offense, I expect that it will be better this season than last and the defense will be very solid from the get-go.

 

I believe you and I are thinking the same thoughts about JC. The offense and defense is looking really good already. JC is a team that wants to prove what they can do. Get It Done EAGLES!

I agree 100%, but for some reason this game brings out the best in Highlands and it is in Ft. Thomas this year I believe. This may be the best game of the year in nky and I would love to see it firsthand. In the end though I will give the slight edge to the Birds at this point.

How does Rockcastle, which barely beat Corbin and beat a bad team this week, move ahead of CovCath, who lost competitively to a perennial power from Cincinnati? Louisville Central's win over Shelby County is also much more impressive.
