Bellevue 40 Highlands 29

Featured Replies

Valid points on the lack of gym time for some of the football/soccer playing hoops players. On the bright side, it only takes 2-3 kids to turn things around and, HHS has a great coach. I have a strong feeling things will turn soon in Ft. Thomas. With that said, I am sure the existing team will continue to bust tail to get better and will give maximum effort for Coach L. Lot of hoops left for this year's team.

What is the makeup of the Highlands full roster and also the top 8 who are getting minutes from a sports played point of view? How many players are basketball only? How many are also football players?

All are football players save for LaFrange.....However, a lot of talent coming from JV, Frosh and 8th graders....Better dual players with hoop talent than this group with some hoop only players. This Team can't shoot. Regardless of posters like Joat saying it's about bad shot selection....just about every player shoots under 50% from FT line....this crew cannot shoot.

I'm not saying they always draw the best from those communities - sorry - i simply meant - the ability to always draw from EVERYWHERE - (mcdonald/schulte/weyer/pangallo/moeves) will always be part of their programs. They cover Campbell communties...

If Brossart ONLY git all the kids from its feeder schools they would have been unstoppable 2 years ago

Trentman, McDonald, Schulte, Zink Crawford, Hackworth, .....I might be missing a couple

Let's give credit to Bellevue. This other stuff is splitting hairs. 2 years in a row Bellevue has beaten HHS. Last year was the first time in 40 years. HHS will be back on top in a couple years.

Is it rather unusual that the only Highlands player who seems to have a high shooting percentage a basketball only kid? Luke LaFrange who is over 40% from 3pt range.

No, it's because u have a bunch of football players with no feel for a shot. The muscle memory just isn't there.

Keep in mind HHS has had very strong middle school classes that have not translated to varsity success. If even half of those kids are in the football program, it will be tough for them to excel in bball. If there is a higher percentage of non footballers, then they have a chance. Coach needs to really reach out to non footballers.

As for the game, not much you can say. Lackluster effort from top to bottom excluding the coaches. There is only so much that a coach can do and Kevin tried a little bit of everything.

Would not say it was so much what Bellevue did as much as it was what Highlands did not do. Bellevue pretty much played a zone the entire contest. Poor shooting was a part of the issue, but the biggest issue was turning it over one time after another after another after another. Heard unofficially at halftime that Highlands had turned the ball over 12 times and to be honest I am not sure if they even had that many field goal attempts.

Kids looked unenthused and like their legs had 10 pound weights attached to each of them. They went down 5-0, then I believe it was 13-7 and a 3 pointer tied the score at 13 with about 5 minutes or so left in quarter number 2. The halftime score was 22-13 when Bellevue went on a little flurry at the end of the quarter.

That honestly probably turned out to be the difference in the game. Birds came out in second half with a lineup that had not been used all year with Finfrock and Hebel on the blocks, Cain with the basketball up top and Dougherty and Kendall on the wings to set ball screens. It worked as good as anything had at the time as they were able to cut the lead to 1. They could never get over the hump it seemed from that point forward as they got away from what had got them back in the game.

Not much else you can say about it. By far the worst game this team has played this year outside of the last 3 quarters of the game against Walton back in late December. They just need to go back to practice, continue to work and see what happens. Biggest thing they need to do is stick "TOGETHER"

We keep hearing about the talent at JV and Frosh level. If any of those kids are non football, I'm taking a hard look at them now. If the varsity guys aren't enthused, may be picking splinters will motivate them.

So you discredit Bellevue. Is it that hard to come to terms that this Highlands team just isn't that good?

I will say it AGAIN, Bellevue did nothing SPECIAL in this game to defeat Highlands. It was more of what Highlands did not do than what Bellevue did. That is the way that I saw it. Posters like you and others are the very reason that there is no longer discussion of games because they always want to interject their thoughts into something that they did not witness first hand.

I am done in this thread and just about done with this altogether, not worth it anymore.

I would say Bellevue game planned well and they executed exactly what the coaches drew up. As you know some times game plans work and some times they do not. Coach Hicks gave his kids the best chance possible with that game plan and Highlands obliged by shooting poorly. IF Highlands shoots and makes a couple threes early and does not turn the ball over against the zone, well Bellevue would have had to adjust. Kids did what they were coached to do.
