Is this the best year ever for the 10th Region?

Featured Replies

Pretty straight forward question. Top to bottom, does anyone ever remember the 10th being this interesting and exciting?

It's a down year which is why all the teams are so close together. IMO the 2002-2013 was some of the best years for the 10th. The Mason-GRC-MoCo-Pendleton and Brossart battles were amazing.

Agree. More parity this year than what I can remember.

Would 10th region folks prefer a year with a lot of parity top to bottom, or a State Champion caliber Mason County team dominating, yet carrying the flag for the region at Rupp Arena?

From a "fan of the 10th" perspective, the parity makes for great games every time out. Very entertaining season so far.

Would I like for a 10th region team to be strong enough to make a deep run at Rupp? No doubt. But I'm not seeing this year what I saw during the years that Gomer is referencing. Those were some STRONG seasons for the cream of the crop in the region.

I honestly prefer the parity, while the superstar teams are fun to watch they almost make the region tournament irrelevant. 2013 for example, MoCo was a sight to behold, but it just wasn't that fun watching them rip everyone by 20+ while everone else struggled for 2nd place. But when everyone's neck and neck that's when you get the games you tell your grandkids about. 2010 is the most recent example I can think of. 1991 with Maysville, Tollesboro, and Harrison is probably a better one. Or the late 90s with Harrison, St. Pat, and Brossart.

I like a mix.

The year Happy Osborne coached Montgomery County, there was very little suspense in the 10th. That team was very dominant, so it made for a less exciting Regional Tournament. But it was fun to follow them and see if they could win the whole thing. Same is true for a couple of the Chris Lofton/Mason County teams.

But I don't like that every year. As someone who prefers the Regional Tournament over District & State Tournaments, I sometimes want to be as thrilled with the game as I am the popcorn.

As others have said in this thread (and elsewhere), there is more parity this year than we've seen in quite some time. So I think both District & Regional Tournament play can be really exciting this year. I don't look for the 10th to bode very well at the State Tournament, although I'd love to be proven wrong.

Having said that, I don't think there are 8 to 10 teams who can win the Regional Tournament, as others believe. I think 8 or 10 teams can win a game or maybe two in the Region, but to win the Region, you have to win three games. For me, I think only 3 or maybe 4 teams can get that done.

Which teams are you referring to the bolded?

3 or possibly 4 of the teams that come out of the 37th & 40th.

Yep. I was among that group that saw 8-10 teams with the potential to win it. I've whittled my list down to at most 5 teams.

I prefer parity when teams are good. This is not the best year ever in the 10th Region.

Sorry I disagree, some teams in the middle of the pack that can still win the region...

This is still true. My list is still long and I don't see it getting shorter after Tuesday night.

Not sure I'd call this a down year, Campbell, Mason, Scott, Bracken, Augusta, Pendleton, and Paris all have at least one player that will go down as an all time great for their respective schools, Bourbon County's better than they've been in about a decade, Brossart's as good as I've ever seen them, and Montgomery and GRC have solid teams too to bottom even if they aren't at the level those two programs are use to, even Calvary Christian has one of the best teams they've ever had.
