Once he started in the ninth grade, there was no going back. I can't recall many situations that were as clearly a violation as this one.

Indeed, Bill did complete the eighth grade in the spring of 2002.

You know as much a lot of people dont want to like OJ and Bill its really ashamd that he (the kid) now has to pay the price for his guradiens mishandling of the situation.

I was just about to post the same thing. Not this whole thing is going to cost him money, or a good career in the NBA, but this all could hve never happend if he had just stayed where he was supposed to.

To me this should be a little one of life's lessons for Bill. Him and OJ have been living up on this pedistal that alot of us and others have put them on. It might be a good thing for him to know that he's not above the rules and will have to suffer some consequence if he breaks them. As for Huggins, what does he ever do that doesnt seem a little fishy. The whole Walker & Mayo thing should send up a red flag to the NCAA. What could Bob really have to offer these kids besides something that he shouldnt be.

I know that many believe that they are just learning the hard lessons of life. I suppose it depends on what lessons are involved. Have these boys manipulated or have they been manipulated? The answer is obvious.

 

They are not villains. Who are the villians in this sad situation? First, I would have to mention their parents for being weak parents, for not providing the stability and security that all youngsters need, and for being so willing to turn their children over to persons with, shall we say, less than exemplary backgrounds. Next, all of the AAU entourage. From all indications these people have always seen the boys as, to use Rickyp's phrase, their 401(k)s. If some reporter would just take the time to investigate just how everyone earned their respective livings during the last three plus years, the answers would probably be enlightening. Last, but certainly not least, we have NCH with its braintrust. Does anyone really believe that NCH is as innocent as it likes to portray itself? Does anyone really believe that the boys ended up at NCH by accident? Does anyone really believe that NCH didn't know from the beginning a lot more than is being admitted? Probably the most revealing statement to come out of that school was when their AD stated that the NCH athletic program, because of the boys, was financially set for the next ten years.

 

What lessons of life should the boys have learned? I suppose they should have learned that you can't trust very many people. Also, if you have talent that can be translated into big greenbacks, you will attract a lot of unsavory individuals of all ages and walks of life. Finally, when you become "famous", even as a seventh grade kid, everything you do will be exaggerated and you will live under a constant microscope. All of these are hard and unfair lessons. Unfortunately, Bill and OJ have had to face them.

 

These two talented young men deserve better. In reality, we have all failed them.

Easy with the pity party. I find it hard to feel sorry for these two kids. I think in the long run they will be just fine. You sound like you want to blame all of the trouble these two get in to on others. I agree with alot that you say regarding this but nobody made OJ skip class to get his hair cut lastyear. Did they? I think thats a bit of OJ's fault.

You don't think the way they're treated by their "mentors" has anything to do with that? That's a direct reflection of how they have been handled. I know that if I told my kid it was ok to push another kid, he'd do it. If you haven't been told otherwise, do you really know better?

You kind of add credibility to my point, uknowho1. As a matter of fact, I and a few of my classmates skipped classes several times at Holy Family High School to go and get our hair cut at the local barber college. We were all athletes of various and sundry abilities. Sometimes we served detention and sometimes we did not. However, since we didn't live under the constant microscope that is faced by O and Bill, we received no headlines.

 

It is unfortunate that these boys have their every move analyzed and, often, criticized. I couldn't have withstood the scrutiny and I doubt that many of my fellow posters could have either.

 

As for blaming others for the problems faced by Bill and O, let me say that I am placing the blame where it belongs. Again, if some reporter wanted to make a name for himself/herself, that reporter could do so by thoroughly investigating this matter- from pre-Rose Hill to the present. Most posters have little or no idea of the facts other than what they get from media sources. I have seen most of the reporting and I can honestly state that no report concerning the many transfers is without material error.

If all that is true (which I am no disputing) then I can see were their appeal stands a chance.

Rickyp is correct. Rickyp is aware of the true facts as, I believe, am I. As I stated above, Bill finished the eighth grade in the spring of 2002. That is fact. He played as a ninth grader at Rose Hill in 2002-2003. That, too, is a fact. NCH moved him back. That, too, appears to be hard to dispute.

 

Having said this, I am a Bill Walker fan. I hope that he is found to be eligible for this coming season. On the other hand, I don't think that some of the others, individual and institutional, deserve to benefit from his presence.

 

Again, a good investigation would reveal much. If I sound like a broken record concerning an investigation, I suppose I plead guilty. It all needs to be checked out. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen.
