What negatives do you see with 6 classes?

Featured Replies

Are you okay with a 4-21 Dayton High School team being invited to the 36th District Basketball Tourney?

I don't feel strongly about the 6 class system one way or the other, however, I don't think letting more teams into the playoffs is an altogether bad thing.

No, I'm not okay with that -- again, I think it's charity. The season doesn't mean a thing if all teams are invited to participate. Just because other sports allow everyone to participate in the playoffs doesn't mean it's the way it should be done (in my opinion). Why even have a season if everyone is invited, why not just have a playoff?

First negative I see is that teams will be traveling more often and further just for district games. Is this really a good idea, especially in these times of high fuel prices?

Very simply a small talent pool stretched very thin.

There are only 2 more titles added, and most will be nothing more than the old 4 class powers for the first few years. It makes me wonder if there would be a Boyle or Beechwood in the old 3 class system. It seems some kids from those programs benefited a great deal from the last move over the long term. I know this is a different thread, but I wonder what would have become of those two powers if there was never a 4A. Yes travel is a concern, but it was in a 3A and 4A system as well. That's never going to change in a state this small IMO...

There has to be a cutoff GT. So because 6 classes is good, lets go 12 classes more kids will win. Its insane to me for KY to equal Ohio in classes.

I would be for letting everyone into the playoffs ala basketball, way before increasing class sizes. Let everyone has a shot, but don't water down the competition.

So you just dismiss the fact that when we went to four, new powers arrived. If you're hung up on having the same classes as OH, there is nothing I can do to explain why this is good for KY football...

You do realize that no matter how many classes they go to, for the most part, the same teams will win most of the state championships? Sending everyone does not mean everyone gets a "shot". We all know that there are only a certain few that can win it in each class, each year.

So true, but the same thing happened in 75 when we went to 4 classes. Some rivalries died, but some new ones were born ( I believe a Highlands vs. S. Oldham rivalry was on the cusp of happening. Certainly the Highlands vs CovCath rivalry really took off after the creation of 4 classes because it became a either us or them winning the district thing). Such will be the case with 6 classes I suspect. Furthermore, by creating smaller districts (which was only possible by the creation of more classes) more teams will be able to play out of district near by teams, thus possibly creating more intense rivalries of the teams agreeing to play. You may be right about some receiving unrefusable offers from distant teams to play in the bowl games. But with dollars becoming more and more important, I think the coaches of out of district teams will find a way to make sure they schedule local teams and develop rivalries that pack the stadiums year in and year out.

Sorry HHS Dad for not sticking to the negatives, but I thought it important to respond. If you disagree, feel free to edit/delete my post. LN

Beechwood vs. Dixie Heights in '06 is an example of what you are speaking!

(and shouldn't less mandated travel games help teams' athletic budgets???)

And count on a few others to join that upper tier in A-5A...

Maybe...:D

Have always respected your opinion and your right to express it. Just won't in this case, come close to agreeing. Some people on here seem to think that the wants and needs of the 30 and 40-something generation should drive what is wanted by kids. Thankfully, there are those out there who listen to what the kids want in spite of what their parents and other older ones express. Somehow a lot of the negatives expressed by you and others about changes in football classes remind me of the stories of my own folks, who of course walked to school five miles to get there, even longer to get home, uphill both ways .....

If you respect my opinion, thanks.

IMO the kids will always want more classes, a better chance at winning "state" or even making "state". Heck when I was 16, I'd say the more the better as well.

IMO, stop listening to the kids quite so much, and start looking at some facts. It's been 31 years since the state jumped to four classes. After 31 years and 29 more teams, the state wants to add two classes?

It's not about walking uphill twice, never said that. It's about numbers. And in Kentucky the numbers don't support six football classes.

Kissinger, I'm just curious if you saw a survey or study that showed what the kids want. As far as I know, it's the 30/40 year olds that are asking for the new classes (and the formerly proposed split) not the kids. The informal information I've been able to gather from various sources showed that most kids (the people it affects the most) were against the proposed split and I'm wondering if most would be for or against the additional classes. Your post makes it sound like all the kids want additional classes, and I think that's a suspect statement.
