Male ranked over T & X: let the fur start flying!

Featured Replies

So if I follow you right the defending champ should always be ranked #1 to start the next season? For the record, I don't buy into that logic at all.

I not aware of any other 4A team that won the championship and returns their qb ( Mr. Football candidate ). Returns an OC where he has a proven track record of scoring 40+ points a game. How could anyone vote against the Rocks??? Their record at "defending a title" is pretty good..... I know a lot of football is yet to be played and rankings go out the window on the first kickoff (against a quality opponent), but, History tells us that the only team truly deserving of a PRESEASON No. 1 is Trinity.....

Barring MASSIVE losses and the inevitability of a huge dropoff by the defending champion, I would always place the defending champ back at the top. Preseason rankings are nothing but speculation and in the case of Male being #1, I find there to be a lot of speculation over the talent they have coming up for this season. I don't see the necessary huge swings in talent that it would take for me to take the defending champion off of the top spot in this case.

I completely agree with you. Ranking should be based upon potential this year not what happened last year.

How does one measure potential without a legitimate measuring stick?? Last year should be taken into consideration, it is the only objective measure we have....

Since your team is #1 this preseason, I presume that your comment means that you're buying? I'll take a Starbucks! :jump:

I'll send you $5. What's your fax number? :flame: :p

But it's no longer objective because it no longer exists. We are evaluating what IS to come (possibly), not what HAS BEEN.

Male lost to St. X in a strange game and from some accounts played better than St. X that night. They lost a whale of a game to JH at JH. JH coulda/shoulda beat St. X at JH the following week. Losing only to JH and St. X in one year is nothing to sneeze at. From what I've heard, Male has nearly everything back from last year and I've heard Trinity loses nearly all of Nick Petrino's targets. One man does not a team make. While Trinity will be more than capable of filling spots, they have lost a lot and at the beginning of the season, they will not be the best team in the state (in my opinion). That distinction will go to the team that was playing good football all year long and returns a ton of talent (Male). I think Trinity should be number two followed by St. X. After that, it's a crapshoot.

Should I fax you back your $1 in change, or simply have it applied to your PayPal account?

There are decent arguments for both teams to be #1, but I agree with BuddyBW that, at the beginning of the season, Male has the strongest case. With about 7 starters back on offense and 9 back on defense, the Bulldogs return the most by far of any of the Big 3. When you also add Justin Green to the mix, who is returning after missing virtually all of last season with a serious injury, you are adding one of the fastest players in Kentucky. Moreover, for the first time in at least four years, Male will have good size and experience on their OL and DL, led by big 3-year starter Sam Webb (6-5, 300). Beaumont (RB/WR/DB) and Heyman (TE/LB/DE/S) will definitely be two of the best players in Kentucky.

It's close, but I think Male deserves this preseason nod.

A legitimate measuring stick is returning starters, returning proven stars, etc. when you do that no question Male should be ranked #1, not the champ from last year just because they won. That's not logical as Mr.Spock would say!

I do. It was an earned right, and it is not like we lost a bunch to dicredit our standing, beyond that, Male hasn't really done much with their RETURNING talent as is.

Believe me, they can bring all 11 back, that defense isn't a concern too much for Cove.

I'm with Ru on this one RP. Highlands won it in 04, yet to rank them number 1 in 05 would have been sheer lunacy. They lost almost every starter and had to completely rebuild with predominantly juniors and sophomores. Ranking them number 1 in 05 would have made zero sense.

And if Male only lost two close games to X and JH last year, I have a hard time buying into your comment that they didn't do much wth their returning talent.

^ One that is comparing a Highlands team that lost everything, when we certainly did not. Two, Male's resume is not impressive based upon close wins and losses, they barely beat a pretty good PRP team, that got trounced in the playoffs, then barely beat Manual, barely beat Hop-Town, etc.....

Then your argument supporting T as the number one team is not what you stated (to the effect of we won it last year and thus earned the right to automatically be number one because we won it last year). The argument of we have a lot of returning starters coming back also and Male's returning starters are not necessarily that good is a valid argument. I think the latter position is defendable, but not the former. Keep in mind that your response was initially to Ru's comment that he did not buy into the logic that the prior champ is automatically the number one team this year. You posted that you do buy into that logic.
