Got to watch the second half of a Jenkins Girls' basketball game in Gatlinburg this week that featured Whitney Creech. She scored 33 in the game, having 2 players face guard her the length of the floor. The game before she scored 65 points. For the season Creech is averaging 50.9 PPG and 17.7 RPG while shooting over 55% from the field.

 

Currently this is how the KY scoring record looks:

4,948 Jaime Walz (Highlands) 1991-96

4,385 Geri Grigsby (McDowell) 1975-77

4,360 Whitney Creech (Jenkins) 2008-2015

 

Creech should break the scoring record and get over 5,000 career points. She is very athletic, takes good shots, and plays on a team with a winning record.

 

This poses two questions I have to the BGP community:

(1) What is the national scoring record for Girls' high school basketball?

(2) Will/should Whitney Creech win Miss Basketball (WKU Signee)?

If you look at years playing varsity, then I think Grigsby is more impressive than the rest on the list.

Grigsby played only 3 years due to Title IX not being implemented until her Sophomore season and I recall her Head Coach (current state senator) Johnny Ray Turner telling a story of a game when she played Feds Creek (I played for JRT many years ago and got to hear all the Grigsby stories on the bus rides). Coach Turner said she had 81 points through 3 quarters of play and he took her out as the score was out of control. Reminiscing back he regretted the decision as he felt she could have scored 120 that game (seeing as that would be a record people would still be talking about).

 

Grigsby's father called many 15th Region games as well and played at UK if I am not mistaken. She was ahead of her time for sure, but I digress. Do you have any information/opinion's about the aforementioned questions I posted?

I don't want to take anything away from any of these girls, but how many points would Grigsby have scored if she played 6 years of ball? Nothing more to add other than comparing apples to apples.

Creech is quite the player.

No. Creech should not win Miss Basketball. Erin Boley is the best player in the state by far. Not even a discussion IMO.

What makes her better? Havent got to see Erin play, but was very impressed with the way Creech played. Not saying your wrong, just would like to know what kind of game Boley has (outside shooter? post player? etc.).

Uhhhh Boley is 6'2 with a much better outside shot than Creech. Bigger, stronger, more athletic. Heck, she's going to Notre Dame. Boley is a McDonald's All-American..

Grigsby also played before the 3 point line was adopted. Her numbers are incredible for the amount of time she played at the varsity level.

Creech is a very nice player and will be a finalist, but IMO Boley is a standout to win Ms. Basketball.

 

There's a reason why Boley is signed with Notre Dame. She is without question the best player in Kentucky and one of the best in the USA. If she doesn't win Miss Basketball, then the award is a sham.

Creech is a good scorer and is a good player that can represent the EKY side of the state well, but hands down, Boley is the overall best player in the entire state. If anyone other than Boley wins Miss Basketball, I for one will be very surprised.

Great information thus far, I need to get out and watch Boley. I have done some research from other states and found IL, IO, CA, and OH's Girls' basketball scoring records. Creech has more than any of them. I still cant find a definite site that shows the national scoring record, and still wonder if Creech is going to bring the Girls' national record home to KY.

She also played in an time where the competition was not even close to what she would see if she played in high school today. It was at the beginning of the Title IX mandated girls basketball and most schools just cobbled together teams. There was a girl in our region named Peggy Gay who played for Buckhorn (and later for EKU) that put up big numbers against everyone she played.

If a team had one girl that could dribble and score most defenses couldn't stop them in those days.
