For a time, it was total number of yards on offense in the OT period. I believe Pikeville advanced over Lynch one year in the 70's due to the rule. By ONE yard.

It's surprising that many would be defunct in the 55-60 years this covers. I guess consolidation has been more prevalent than I thought.

Check that...it was a state quarterfinal. Beat Arlington on most first downs in 1987, and then beat Arlington again in State Quarterfinal on penetrations in 1995.

I read somewhere that some of the games it was based on Deepest Penetration in Overtime.

 

A Tie was settled before that by the stats themselves. Most yards was declared the winner I believe in a playoff game.

Here is some stuff:

 

If a first or second round playoff game ended in a tie:

one point was awarded for most penetrations of the opponents 20-yard line,

one point for most first downs, and

one point for most net yardage

If it were still a tie, the team with most net yardage was declared the winner.

In the championship, if the final score were a tie, the teams were declared co-champs.

See 1963. Cumberland and Jenkins tied at 7-7. Cumberland declared the winner on stats.

1965 Erlanger Lloyd and Mt Sterling tied at 13. Lloyd was declared winner.

 

Next week Lloyd tied Fleming Neon at 13. Lloyd declared winner again.

 

Next week Lloyd won the state title over My Old Kentucky Home. 27-0.
