Should the NCAA let Vegas do the football rankings?

Featured Replies

They seem to know the teams a lot better than the sports writers and personalities.

NCAA isn't in charge of the college football postseason. University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame serve on the College Football Playoff Board of Managers and govern the administrative operations, with commissioners managing the event.

So the NCAA had nothing to do with the playoffs? These guys decided on their own to have a playoff and told the NCAA to back off? That's cool, maybe we can get the rest of the conferences to overthrow this group and extend it to 8 teams.

Basically, yes. That was the autonomy ruling from a couple years ago. The College Football Playoff is ran by all football conferences and they split the money accordingly.

If the NCAA were in charge of the event, every conference would receive an automatic bid (as in all other sports). The guaranteed spot in the big six bowl games for a non-Power 5 school was to keep those leagues happy without giving too much. If the non-Power 5 leagues complained too much, the Power 5 leagues would split in every sport and you'd no longer have an NCAA basketball tournament with small school Cinderellas.

If Vegas Did the Rankings the Top 10 would be:

1. Alabama

2. Oklahoma

3. Ohio State

4. Clemson

5. Mich St.

6. Oregon

7. Baylor

8. Stanford

9. Notre Dame

10. Florida State

According to RJ Bell ESPN Vegas Insider

What if we had the old BCS system? Would we be talking about Clemson and Iowa being 1/2?

The old BCS System I believe would have 1. Clemson 2. Alabama 3. Oklahoma 4. Ohio State 5. Michigan St. 6. Iowa. I may have the top 3 in the wrong order. But I know 4-6 are correct. I can't remember where I saw this list. I will try to find it and post it on here.

Maybe, but it would still only be a guess. Once the first (Final 4) rankings come out, the various polls begin to skew. The history shows if you are in a power conference, and undefeated, you rise towards the top of the polls.

From my perspective "College Football" has always been corrupt in the context of post-season play.

The post-season field needs to be at least eight teams (and 16 teams if you want to have some conference winners automatically in the post-season field).

Additionally, the NCAA needs a "Supreme Court" of post-season selectors. In other words, honest and objective people need to be appointed to the selection committee that don't have any strong ties with "anyone" and it needs to be at least a 10 year appointment if not lifetime.

In short, you have to take the colleges out of it because some of the decision making is too corrupt and too susceptible to special interests.

I agree with everything except where you would make it 16 teams if you had to have automatically accept conference winners. What is your thought behind that and why do you think this can't be done with 8 teams. I hate the thought of 16 teams and watching an Alabama and Northwestern first round match up. I just think with 16 teams, too many bad teams would get in.

I am okay with 8 teams but I think we all have to be careful if something like 5 of those 8 are automatic bids from winning conference championships. Any of the major conference champs are probably "deserving" but if they are deserving there is no reason to make it automatic. Make it fair for everyone, the top eight chosen by the "Supreme Court" of post-season rankings.

You have to take politics out of the equation.

Think of it in Pro Football Terms, everyone knows EXACTLY how the playoff teams are determined. I realize college football is different but you have to eliminate all the special interests from the equation and it can be done if the NCAA wants to do it.

Having an automatic winner for winning your conference is fair to everyone in the power 5. It's very simple then, if you want to guarantee your spot in the playoffs win your conference. If you don't do that, then you leave yourself open to peoples opinions deciding if you get in or not. Teams truly control their destiny if there are automatic bids. Then that leaves three other at large spots and I very much doubt there would be more than three teams who are clearly great teams who just didn't happen to win their conference who should get in.

Just because someone wins their conference doesn't mean they are the best team from that conference. The committee should be free to choose the 8 best teams which is really the point of this thread.

Vegas doesn't pull any punches, in Vegas you put your money where your mouth is and everything else is just noise.

Completely agree that the 8 best teams need to be there no matter, but 9 times out of 10 the best team from each conference will be there so they will get there anyways. The real reason I want them to have automatic conference champs is because it would force Notre Dame to join a conference or risk having to make it as an at large every year.

And that my friend is a special interest.
