Will Chicago turn into Ferguson after video released

Featured Replies

Lots of scathing criticism of Emanuel in this article from the Chicago Tribune:

Emanuel dismisses top cop Garry McCarthy amid pressure for change - Chicago Tribune

It also mentions that the shooter in this case had 12 open complaints against him. That one is on the police chief. He shouldn't have been on the streets. McCarthy should have been fired and Emanuel forced out years before after he defended an officer that murdered Rekia Boyd.

Scathing criticism and openly calling for his ouster are two different things.

Couldn't read the article as I am not going to pay to read it. I will wager it did not openly call for Emanuel's resignation as mayor.

I'm not sure why it is trying to get you to pay . It came up fine last night on my computer but in getting a truncated version on my phone. It pretty much said that McCarthy AND Emanuel should be gone and that they should have been gone before now.

I can't believe how many police shootings occur in Chicago. They average about 1 police shooting a week. That seems like a crap ton of shootings.

Fatal Shootings By Chicago Police: Tops Among Biggest U.S. Cities | Better Government Association

Other notable findings include:

Chicago police shot 240 people from 2010 through 2014, or an average about one per week, according to interviews and records. That was more than other departments examined by the BGA, though Los Angeles, New York and Phoenix provided incomplete data on overall police shootings, or data on fatal shootings only.

Since 2010 the City of Chicago’s municipal government has paid $26.7 million to families of victims who were shot and killed by police, according to interviews and records. That includes a $5 million payment to the family of Laquan McDonald, the teen who was fatally shot 16 times by police last October. A FBI spokeswoman says a criminal investigation of that shooting is ongoing.

Interesting/alarming numbers, but you can also say that the research is incomplete. Wouldn't one expect for police shootings to be more rampant in places where gun violence (citizen to citizen) is high? Collateral damage is not a good way to explain it, but there should be a higher expectation of police shootings in these violent areas. Not sure how many would ever acknowledge that, but it is true.

Does anyone but me find it ludicrous that the mayor Emanuel said he refused to resign? What happened to the buck stops here type of leadership? He's an uber Liberal that thinks he is above it all.

I've said this from the beginning. He has enough connections to keep his job. There's no way he should keep his job. He's playing dumb on things that he had to know were going on.

Just another example of a career politician draining the American tax payer.

Chicago doesn't have a police problem.

It has a residents of Chicago problem.

Chicago has an independent review board (forget the name of it) that is used to review cases like this one and the one that we will probably hear about this week. They got the dashcam video days after the incident and did nothing for a year.

The head of that board resigned this evening effective immediately.

DOJ is doing an investigation.

Sounds like a video from another police shooting from a year ago may be released next week.

A report says the officer shot a fleeing suspect and planted a gun.

Emanuel: City will support release of Ronald Johnson video - Chicago Tribune

Charges will not be filed. The prosecutor says that even though he was running away from the officer and posed no threat to the officers who fired the victim was running towards a park and could have turned around and fired.

Fixed. Had been reading another article.

Victim's attorney says there was no gun in the victim's hand when he was fleeing.

Attorney for the victim says the only DNA found on the supposed gun was on the hammer of the gun. He says it's an indication the gun was a plant.

How exactly would his DNA being on the hammer be a indication of a plant?
