November 19, 201510 yr For the right price, I think this makes sense. Mix him in with skipped starts, inevitable injuries, occasional 6 man rotation in places. You are not managing to contend in 2016, so pulling a young starter at 80-100 pitches & skipping starts makes some sense. Not sure if he'd be willing to do long relief if / when the young kids are all in a groove. Lots to be learned from a guy who pitches without overwhelming stuff. He'd be an extra pitching coach on the staff.
November 19, 201510 yr They all aren't gonna throw 200-220 innings a year right now. Lamb DeSclafani Bailey Moscott Stephenson Finnegan Lorenzen Iglesias Sampson Who do you want to take innings away from?
November 19, 201510 yr Author Who knows about the health of Moscott and Bailey. I could see a few going to the bullpen and/or a few starting at AAA.
November 19, 201510 yr I'd rather have Latos but got bashed for suggesting the Reds sign a veteran pitcher to go along with a young staff. Arroyo is the better clubhouse guy but Latos has more upside.
November 19, 201510 yr The Reds are going to be horrible the next 2-3 seasons. Why would you waste innings on him? Let the young guys pitch and see what you have. A pitching coach, not a washed up, league average pitcher, should be guiding them. I tend to agree, but I wouldn't be opposed to signing Arroyo to a deal similar to the one Lackey signed with the Cards. Pay him a $500K base with incentives. If he pitches well, he could have some value at the trade deadline. If not, he could eat some innings & mentor the very young staff. It certainly sounds like Bronson wants to be in Cincinnati, whether the Reds want him or not.
November 19, 201510 yr The Reds could use a veteran option to help develop some of these young guys. Odds are you go into 2016 with all the position spots same as 2015 with the exception of LF. The division is just that much better than it was when the Reds were making the playoffs.
January 25, 201610 yr Bronson would be a veteran influence. I'd take him if the price is right. Year is a loss anyway, might as well add another pitching coach. Seems like the fans like Bronson.
January 25, 201610 yr Year is a loss anyway, might as well add another pitching coach. Seems like the fans like Bronson. Keeps another guy from gaining big league innings. I'm in favor of a total rebuild, no spare tire needed
