How will these two teams compare this year? Who will win the district, and why?

 

I'll take CCH because of the QB and the WR's that they have now . The RB's will be good also . You can't just shut down the run and double cover 1 wr this year ! The Birds are good this year , but I think CCH wins the one that counts this year !!!:thumb:

The only way I can think of that Cov. Cath. can take Highlands in this match up is if they can stop Jordan Kramer. He hurt them pretty bad last season with his speed and athleticism and he returns with another year of experience and training under his belt.

 

Even though Cov. Cath. does return some good players, Highlands returns more. This includes the whole offensive line, which should definately help. I respect both of these teams in the upcoming season.

He's good enough to play either, but IMO he's needed more on the offensive line. I could personally see him getting used sort of like Spradlin did last year playing mostly O-line and some D-line as needed.

 

I think you will se more players seeing action on both sides of the ball this year.Still two platooning but more players being used in spot situations.

What kind of defense does highlands run? I remember seeing them on film at one point in time hopping and swicthing around, then on snap, blitzing. Didn't really seem to have a formation. It must have been confusing.

 

BTW, I think the cannon goes BOOM in this matchup. Depth and good talent will overcome Great talent and not having the same quality of backups

I'm not familiar with the backups for each team. Fill us in.

Highlands seems to have been winning the freshman league forever now. That's where I see them having the more quality of back-ups. CovCath does have talent though. It should be a dandy to watch.

I somewhat agree with point 1, although I place a little more emphasis on the freshmen results and the indication it provides as to the talent pool. Some programs place little emphasis on freshmen football so there can be vast differences when the talent makes its way to varsity. But Highlands and CovCath both place a pretty heavy emphasis on freshmen football.

 

As to point 2, while some will claim I am making excuses, the frosh game that year was pretty close between the Birds and CovCath. Highlands was missing 4 of their best players with injuries that game including Kramer who was injured before the first game. Jake Urlage, the Birds next best runner on that freshman team, missed a lot of the second half of the CovCath game with a leg injury. Highlands back then on the varsity level was a passing team and the frosh did the same, particularly with Kramer and Urlage out or hurting the first three games. No disrespect intended to the qb for the Highlands frosh team, but he was not a passer at all. The Birds started out 0-3 that year (with the CovCath loss being the third loss, the prior losses being to Holy Cross and Scott as I recall). The Birds won their last seven games. Once Kramer returned from a broken leg (or was it ankle?) and the other kids returned, the Birds looked very good. Would they have beaten CovCath with these kids? Who knows.

LN - My point regarding Frosh football is that you can win at the frosh level with only a few very good players (ie qb or running back). That's not true once they get to varsity. Instead of competing against one grade, you're now going against the best players from 4 grades.

Re: Speed of HHS defense. My son (going into 8th grade) received a letter from a trainer who helps you improve your speed. He took it personal until I told him all the Jr Football and HHS players probably received the same letter since that's what the Birds emphasize. Starts early in Ft Thomas.

I don't think Ted sends out letters everyone I know that goes to him heard about him from word of mouth. If it was Ft. Thomas I would assume it was Guidugli (sp?).

Sorry, I didn't see the letter and my son threw it away because he couldn't attend.
