Word is that Steve Kerr won't be back on the sidelines until after the All Star Break at the earliest. In the meantime Luke Walton is the head coach of the Warriors. Because of NBA record keeping every Warriors victory will be credited to Steve Kerr. Luke is 5-0 as the Warriors coach but the books say Steve Kerr is off to a 5-0 start as the Warriors head coach.

The best example I can remember was when Mike Krzyzewski left Duke after 12 games in 1994 for back surgery and to recover from exhaustion. Pete Gaudet took over as interim head coach and went 4–15. Duke ended up with a record of 13–18. Duke credits the first 12 games of the season to Krzyzewski and the final 19 games to Gaudet.

Hypothetical. Lets say Kerr doesn't come back this year, Warriors go 70-12 and win it all again. Is Steve Kerr the coach of the year? If he's the one getting the wins and losses he would have to be, correct?

 

Dumb rule. Guy sitting on the sideline should be the one getting the w's or l's.

They are a great team but that is not my point. Even if the team goes 41-41 Stev Kerr's coaching record is the one statistically impacted even though he isn't coaching the team. That seems stupid to me.

Exactly how I was thinking.

Well, they tend to get things right at Duke.

 

Ironically recovering from back surgery is what is keeping Kerr off the bench.

Luke has ascended quickly. Only 35 years of age.

Absolutely.

If Kerr is out an extended period of time the record would stay with Luke. No one seems to know how long an "extended" period of time is.

If it's that long it doesn't go to Kerr.

So the rule is, who ever is designated head coach gets wins and loses until he comes back or is fired?

I could see some sort of limit being set. (50 games, ect ect)

When this happened in the NFL with Chuck Pagano missing time due to cancer treatment and recovery and Bruce Arians taking over and having great success, Arians was named NFL Coach of the Year even though he was technically the OC and only an interim coach.

 

Maybe the NBA would do something like that?

Incidentally, there are rumors that Luke Walton will be the next Lakers coach after this season's catastrophe that the Lakers season is setting up to be.
