For those that may be interested, the OHSAA has released the state playoff pairings to begin this Friday night and continue through the first week of December.

A couple of interesting notes:

• Moeller, at 5-5, failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2001, a string of 13 years.
  
• Division I power Cleveland St. Ignatius (11 State Titles, most in Ohio, any division) also did not qualify for the playoffs
  
• Despite the loss to Cincy LaSalle in week 3, Colerain finished with the 2nd highest Harbin total in Division I

Again, in Division I only, there are only two regions with 16 teams in each. They play in a bracketed format with no re-seeding.

 

Colerain is the #1 seed in the Southern, or R2, region which encompasses Cincinnati, Dayton and half'ish of Columbus. Ideally, the #1 seed should have the easiest path to the finals, right?

 

WRONG-O!! If the seeds play out, Colerain will have to go through both St. Xavier and Elder just to get to the state Semi's, where they will likely have to face either 10-0 Wayne (state runner-up from 2014) or Hilliard Davidson (2-time State Champ) just to earn the right to play St. Edward (defending State Champ) in the State final....WHEW!!!

 

Man, I love playoff football.

A modern day murderers row for Colerain. Go Cards!

I know Moe suffered a stretch where they had 2 QBs out but will this year cause them to reconsider their scheduling? That schedule was crazy.

When was the last time Moe and St. Ignatius both missed the postseason? That has to be a rare occurrence.

 

After starting 0-4, Ironton ran the table in their conference to grab the 8 seed in DV Region 17. Congrats to the Fighting Tigers for once again making the playoffs. Only one or two schools in Ohio have been to the postseason more times than Ironton all time.

Who beat St Edward? Someone from out of state?

 

Correct me if im wrong - isn't the Dublin Coffman QB the kid going to UK? Having a good season?

Maybe I'm a little bias being from KY but seriously, Ohio has the most ignorant playoff system. Is there any other state that does their playoffs like the state to the north? Do the people in Ohio even like their own system?

Why? I prefer it. The regular season actually matters. You have to earn the playoffs, no more powder puff scheduling to pad a record. Even if you get in, the prior 10 weeks rewards the best teams. I don't like Kentucky give everyone a trophy format. There will be running clocks all over the state Friday night , only thing that can happen is a star player gets hurt. I also prefer the neutral site and alternating Fridsy and Saturday night schedule.

Hoak is the kid from Coffman. Not sure of his numbers.

My guess is most states do NOT have 80% of their teams make the playoffs like KY does.

I think the Harbin is a great system, and yes, most people I know in Ohio like their system.

My guess is most states do NOT have 80% of their teams make the playoffs like KY does.

 

I'm not a 100% supporter of KY's system but I think it is way more fair than Ohio's. The #1 seed has to face the hardest road to get to ship? There has been several years were 8 and 9 win teams snubbed from the playoffs simply cause they didn't score enough? I'm all for a tough regular season schedule but you can only do so much when the tougher schools won't schedule a weaker opponent. I feel bad for the kids who work their butts off and at the end of the season they have nothing to show for it cause the coaches and administrators didn't get them the games they needed to make the playoffs. Those are just my quick thoughts on it.

I can assure you that the people making the schedules are versed in what they need to ensure playoff trips if they achieve success during the regular season. Opposed to in KY they are rewarded for playing a good schedule, like in the NCAA. A 6a school--clears throat-- that refuses to schedule other good 6a schools and fills in gaps with 2a-4a schools would risk missing playoffs, even at 10-0

Points scored are not a factor in Harbin ratings so no undefeated team got nixed because of points scored.

 

Scheduling is the challenge in some cases.

 

I think most people would rather see really good teams occasionally get nixed because others were better than see winless teams make the playoffs like we have here. A one-win team got a 2 seed and hosts a game. Think about that.

I'm probably not the Harbin expert that CardinalsFan is, but I pride myself in my knowledge of the system. I'm 99.99% sure margin of victory never comes up in either of the scoring tiers.

I understand that and I'm not condoning that but those teams are knocked out rather quickly. My biggest argument is for the kids, they have no say in scheduling and realistically they are the ones being punished.
