Reading CJ this morning and they talked about the emergence of the Harper brothers for Waggener. How are they possibly eligible when they played at least the first 3 varsity contests for Trinity (check KHSAA stats)? If there was a change of address, Waggener and Trinity are about 1 mile apart, so how does that justify eligibility? I thought JCPS also had their own rules on sitting out when transferring from private to public or vice versa?

 

I have never heard of kids playing varsity in the same sport for 2 different schools in the same season.

Albeit not the same fall season, Desmond Goodman played football for E'town and baseball for North in the same school year (transferred custody at Christmas break).

 

As far as the Waggener transfers, they could have bought a house and said they couldn't afford Trinity anymore. Or could have downsized. Or had a parent lose a job.

 

Any of those would have been valid reasons.

 

Plus, when an athlete goes from a great program (Trinity) to a struggling one, those transfers don't get scrutinized as much.

 

It's not like the Harpers were impact players at Trinity.

Brents, at least, was a known name.

Not true. Likely this was a bona fide change of address. Those are very easy to review typically unless information is presented that causes it to be looked into further.

 

The other unknown factor, did Trinity send a letter to board endorsing the move ? If so, that goes a long way to determining the eligibilty as well.

I'm not arguing if the move was 100 percent legit. And I agree with you, if Trinity endorsed the move (and knew it wasn't for athletic purposes), then yes that helps. Absolutely.

 

However, in my area if a girl basketball player transfers to E'town (instead of say John Hardin) or a boy transfers to Taylor County (instead of Caverna), those kids aren't getting quick and immediate clearance (whether they packed up and moved and sold a house and both parents changed jobs). They could do everything by the book, but they're not getting quick-and-east clearance because of WHO they transferred to.

 

Granted they're public and not private -- so the rules will be a bit different -- but they're still getting cleared as fast as some other non-star kids who switch schools with the same types of reasoning (moved, built a house, parents changed jobs, etc.).

 

When you're a good program and you get a transfer (especially if a standout), then you get a "skeptic eye" too.

 

NOT saying that's what's going on in this particular instance. Don't know the specifics of this case.

Happened last year. DJ Jenkins started the basketball season at Scott County and ended it in Harrison County. He played in PC's gym twice that season in different uniforms.

Its really hard to justify paying all that tuition as a parent when your qb son gets demoted to 2nd string.

Any transfer has to go through the KHSAA to get approved/denied. If they have been ruled eligible, they have met one of the provisions & was granted from the KHSAA. School districts can't bypass the KHSAA ruling & only a judge can put an injunction in on a ruling.

d) Death of One or More Custodial Parents

e) Boarding Schools

f) Non Athletic Participation for an Entire Calendar Year

g) Reassignment by Board of Education

h) Transfer from Non-Member school

Stick to Hardin Co. Larry started games at QB for them last season and Manny played varsity as a freshman, which doesnt happen at T. They wouldve been impact players had they gotten it together.

Look guys the transfer rules in the KHSAA are a joke. If you have a decent lawyer and whine enough you will be eligible. If not they,KHSAA, may rule you ineligible. They hate to investigate and in many cases will refuse to do so if an individual at a school does not want to put their name on the accusation. It's getting to the point where everyone is breaking the rules so no one wants to be the whistleblower.

 

And people can complain about the privates all they want, many of the worst offenders are a small group of publics.

If JCPS has a rule trying to keep former private schoolers from transferring to JCPS publics and playing, then JCPS NEEDS to enforce it (although saying a kid can't transfer from X or T but can from North Oldham, that creates a bit of an issue).

 

I thought the rule was from one JCPS program to another and not necessarily from X or T (or DeSales or CAL or KCD or Holy Cross or whatever).

 

The Jenkins basketball case is a pretty good one. Plenty of people floored when he was eligible at both in the same school year.

 

And I know "financial hardship" is not an official reason. However, I've seen it used enough in the "other" category to understand people use it.

The inside story from Trinity is that they got kicked off the team at Trinity and did not leave due to financial hardship. That is coming from a inside source at Trinity. They used the financial hardship as the reason when things weren't going well at Trinity. Sure looks as though Trinity hasn't missed a beat without out them. They finally found a level of football where they could play.
