October 26, 201510 yr If I order something for pick up, I feel no obligation to tip on a carry out order. To me it's the same as going to McDonald's or Taco Bell or WalMart for that matter. All they are really doing is ringing my order up and giving it to me. I don't have an issue with a tip jar, but it annoys me that there is a tip line on the receipt for a carry out order. The places where you order and they bring it to you, depends on whether they get your drinks for you or not. If they're getting you drinks and bringing you refills, then $1 a person or 10% is kind of the norm. If they are just dropping your food off and you never see them again, there's no reason to tip. Same goes for buffets. If it's one of the places that bring you drinks and refills and keep your table picked up and clean, again it's $1 a person or 10%. Haven't been to a barber for years, but always tipped when I did. If someone goes above and beyond I always try to give them something for the effort. I have a kind of, buy you lunch mentality on that. At the Florida house I have to prune my palm trees twice a year. It's a mess for the garbage guys, and mine are the really sharp kind. I always give them a $20, and they take it all at once, which they don't have to do. Stopped at Pilot station a couple of weeks ago, was having a hard time getting air pressure on the rear inside tires checked on the RV. The kid there saw me having a hard time and came out and did it for me, no charge. I gave him a $10. There is so much bad service these days that I really appreciate when people go above and beyond.
October 26, 201510 yr Barber Valet Over Tip my server if they do a good job, Under Tip is they need to work harder Trash Man - mostly because he does some heinous clean up for me throughout year During the holidays, I also gift my trash guy with cookies or some kind of food, plus a gift card, which I consider an annualized "tip"

October 26, 201510 yr Gotcha. I disagree with that logic but that's me. The whole concept of tipping is for employees to supplement wages. You "tip" the owner by coming back again and again. Why should we supplement the business owner? I've worked in the service industry before and I tip well, but I often wonder how we ever got to this point.

October 26, 201510 yr There is so much bad service these days that I really appreciate when people go above and beyond. Your 100% right on that, customer service is almost non existent these days. Even when the service is bad I still tip the people that I know make their living off tips, but when the service is good or someone goes out if their way to help, I am overly generous. A high school friend and I run a lawn care/landscaping business, we do everything we can to make sure our customers are happy, even if it means losing a little money here and there. But it always pays off in the long run with customer retention and year end bonuses. Just last week, we had a mower lose air pressure on a tire and ultimately the tire separated from the rim. Got it back on the truck and took it to a local tire shop/garage, at other garages we have been to in the past we would have to wait hours at times to have a tube put in a tire. At this local shop, a worker stopped what he was doing, came right out, pulled the wheel off and fixed the problem. I asked him what I owe him and he said don't worry about it, just come back in the future. I handed him $100 and we were in and out in 20 minutes or less. Blew a brake line on a personal vehicle about an hour ago, guess where I'm having the tow truck guy drop it off at.

I pay a membership fee, but the roadside assistance personnel are frequently working in tough conditions (i.e. terrible weather). I gave the guy $5 one time when he changed a car battery in an icy rain. The last time we needed AAA, it was icy out but I didn't tip at all.

I have a friend whose parents own a tow truck company, which was once part of AAA. They dropped AAA because he said that compared to regular tows, they were losing a lot of money being a certified AAA company. So I imagine you did right by tipping them.
October 26, 201510 yr Definitely tip my hair dresser + I try to bring her something fun depending on time of year, Christmas cookies or chocolates, etc. She loves it. I’ve tipped the garbage guys. Tried to tip guys at Tire Discounters for adding air to my tires, but they don’t accept. I have a co-worker that tips on top of gratuity already included in a group dinner bill. It’s a nice gesture, but none of the rest of us do. LOL

October 26, 201510 yr I'm also confused in those situations and tend not to tip. I'm the opposite...I'm confused so I tend TO tip. :lol2:
