Tipping other than the normal sit down restaurant servers

Featured Replies

Tipping has been talked about before on this site, but mostly in how much in relation to restaurant servers. My question...who else do you tip or NOT tip outside of a server at a restaurant?

Examples. Do you tip you barber/stylist? Do you tip the kid working the cash register at Papa John's when you call in an order and go to pick it up yourself? Cause if you notice if playing with a debit/credit card there is a tip line on the receipt. Do you tip your mechanic, plumber, mail carrier?

My barber/stylists post got me to thinking about this. I tip my barber, he does a great job and that's quite a personal service he is providing.

When I went to a barber/stylist, I'd always leave a tip.

The kid working the cash register when I'm picking up a pizza...no. Heck, he might not have even been the one that took my order down when I called it in.

Mechanic/plumber...no.

Mail carrier...no, in the sense of cash. However, they have been known to find some goodies coming their way at Christmas time.

I tip the valet when I drop my car off.

I tip the barber $3 on a $12 cut.

If I order carry out, I'll usually leave a $2 tip.

I tip my hairstylist 20%. When I get curbside takeout, such as Applebees, I tip a few bucks. Used to tip my mailman at Christmas, but he retired and we never have the same one anymore. If the special needs employees at Kroger ask to help me with my groceries, I try to tip a couple dollars, but sometimes they won't take it. BTW, I don't really need help, and the special needs employees are usually he only ones who ask.

I tip the valet.

Probably should, but have never tipped the newspaper guy. Probably because he puts his address in a card in my paper right before Christmas.

The places that make me a little "tip uncomfortable," are the restaurants like McAllisters. You stand in line, order your food, then sit and wait for them to bring it to you. I actually won't go to those restaurants because I not like that set up. I don't usually tip there, but feel bad about it.

There's a bbq joint in town where I go through the drive thru for lunch sometimes. I pay with my debit car 99% of the time, anything I do. The receipt has a tip line on it. My thought...outside of cook my food and take my money they really haven't served me. I don't feel the need to leave a tip.

I'm also confused in those situations and tend not to tip.

Agreed unless the barber/stylist is the owner. No tips for the owner of a business.

Ummm, can't say I agree whole heartedly with this. I know my barber owns the shop, is the only one who works it, and at $11.00 a haircut he ain't getting rich. Plus, in my mind he does such a better job than the competition in town I want to show my appreciation for being a "cut above". Play on words intended.:thumb:

Gotcha. I disagree with that logic but that's me. The whole concept of tipping is for employees to supplement wages. You "tip" the owner by coming back again and again.

I typically over tip. The one to me that is akward is the buffet. I may go 10% for them to bring me a soda?

Why do we tip in the first place? I don't tip the guy doing my oil change. I don't tip the guy who fixed my computer.

When it comes to a...lets say rather "intimate" personal service, which in essence is what a haircut is, many will agree that a tip is in line. Massage, mani-pedi, etc. fall into this category.

The things you mentioned, changing my oil and fixing my computer aren't "personal".

What makes "personal" more valid to tip than "valuable" as in the guy the fixed my $20,000 car or my work computer?

Your logic is what is used by all but I don't get the distinction.

I get what you are saying about the set up but Mcallisters is not supposed to accept tips. At least at the one I frequent. I go to Mcallisters every Saturday. The one I go to, they have a tip jar when you order, but they choose a charity to give it to and it has the charity listed on the jar. It may be different for other franchisees.
