Looking through the scoreboard I noticed that Phelps High (1A - Pike County) isn't listed among the 1A teams. On the KHSAA Board of Control agenda this week it mentioned a "request" from Phelps High but nothing more. Phelps is in a five-team district but the design of 1A would send the fifth-place finisher in that district on the road to the District 5 winner (Paris) in the first round of the playoffs. Also, the fifth-place finisher in District 5 would not make the playoffs.

 

So did Phelps drop out of district play? Will they be out for four years? Will the fifth-place team from District 5 (Berea) now take the place of Phelps and go to Paris?

 

Lots of unanswered questions that would seem like they should have been made public.

I was wondering about this too... It's all kind of strange...I thought I had heard that they were even building a new field??? is this possibly a situation where they simply just ran out of money?? As far as playoff results I'm not sure it really changes anything other than which lamb gets offered up.

They've been building a field for seemingly ever. I know they played at least two seasons at Belfry's old stadium and played some games at the old Johns Creek field this year. I know Phelps is rarely good, but looking at the facilities for the other Pike County schools you'd think the construction could be expedited just a tad quicker.

 

As for playoffs, obviously Paris would rout Phelps (or Berea, if they allowed them to take their place). But Paris would now have a bye, which would be awkward and unplanned for.

 

It just seems like a big happening this late in the season with no information coming out about it.

KHSAA has NOT updated board of control minutes from Tuesday's meeting. I'm assuming that's gonna be in there.

I'm glad they are getting a field. That will help. As for the numbers game, I just can't see how a school in their location can ever not be fighting a losing game. There just aren't any people there and there is no real reason for outsiders to move in.

I totally agree.

 

If the roads were better leading in Phelps would already be part of Belfry, Pike Central, or East Ridge.

 

Simply put, there is no easy way to get to Phelps and running buses would not be safe come Winter.

Unfortunately there is going to come a time when they will have to go to other schools.

 

I really wish that wasn't the case, but numbers wise, it will happen.

Just last year they closed Majestic-Knox Creek Elementary and sent those kids to Phelps. That school had fewer than 100 kids when it closed.

No turf, sod on the field. Both of the turf fields in the county were paid for by private donations.

Im not sure how the county will be able to keep Phelps open over the next 10-12 years.

The road quality is probably what is keeping it open right now. It would take forever to get some of those kids to either Belfry or East Ridge and it likely wouldn't be too safe. But I can't see how the population will grow any and most likely will continue to decrease.
