No turf, sod on the field. Both of the turf fields in the county were paid for by private donations.

 

Okay. For some reason I was thinking Pike Central also had turf, but it's just Belfry and Shelby Valley.

yes...Belfry and Shelby Valley...as well as Pikeville all have turf. In fact.... I'm hearing Belfry's turf needs replacing.

 

The roads are definitely hazardous in and around Phelps. No easy way in or out.

I grew up in Pike Co & left there long before the roads that crisscross that county now were even a thought. It used to take us 45 minutes on a bus to go from Johns Creek to Belfry to play a basketball game & in the ice & snow much much longer. Now its a 15-20 minute drive. Growing up near Kimper, Phelps still felt like it was in another state compared to nearly any other school in the county.

 

Like others have said, I am not sure what else can be done to sustain that school much longer, I'm honestly shocked that they have built another field for them. If I remember correctly from my old high school days, they could only kick field goals & extra points @ one end of the old field due to the proximity of the field to the road.

 

Does anyone know how many they graduate on average per year these days? When I graduated from Johns Creek we had 126 in my class & I know that Phelps had less than that. (early 90's)
