Dale was pretty good at Highlands. I would use him to compare with.

This could be the question the last few times Boyle and Catholic have played. Players usually get the credit/blame in the blowout win or loses and Coaches get the credit/blame in the close wins or loses. Just the way it is.

I have no problem saying Chuck may have been out coached. Some statements though deride a brilliant record on Chuck's part.

 

Dale is exactly who I had in mind. Awesome coach that would succeed at any level. But even he was out coached on occasion. Even Dale did not win every state title. :thumb:

Agreed, and that is what I was saying. All coaches are out-coached during their career and it shouldn't come as a surprise. Chuck is a great coach but he even gets out coached. It happens and it happens at every level.

One play does not make an entire game out-coached.

 

Some general observations on the factors that lead to the final result:

 

- LexCath defense played their tight man-to-man in pass coverage against a Boyle that was much more pass oriented than most years. This was probably the best pass defense Boyle faced since Central Hardin and maybe even a more aggressive defense that CH.

- Maybe due to the above and maybe due to stakes of the game Boyle seemed a little tight on the some of the pass plays where the receivers were open. On a few instances there were dropped balls and overthrows when receivers were open.

- LexCath did leverage its skill and talent on offense. JJ Obugo, Donnie Morris and Andy Thompson are more than handful. Any game plan that included focusing only one of them was going to leave something open. And LexCath coaches had the confidence in quarterbacks Kirk Fagot and Andy Thompson to throw down field for the big plays. Without these quick, long strikes there is a different outcome.

- Overall LexCath had only 12 first downs and were only 1 for 11 on 3rd and 4th down conversions. So except for the big plays Boyle was doing good job defensively.

- Smith did use the running game where the Knights defense has shown some weakness early in the season. But red zone stops were key. Each time Boyle was forced into a FG instead of touchdown was a confidence builder for a defense that has been improving throughout the season.

 

If these these teams come together again in a few weeks I am sure there will be adjustments and counter-adjustments. But the gritty defense of the Knights and quick strikes were the key.
