Lifeboat Quiz: is this appropriate?

Featured Replies

Curious to hear how folks feel about this. There's a pic of the quiz in the article. I'm having issues with my phone and can't get it on here.

NC_lifeboat1015_700x394Fla. — (WFLA) Valerie Kennel is mad and wants answers. She was furious when her sixth-grade daughter came home with something called “The Lifeboat Test,” where students were forced to make a choice.

Who would they save on a sinking ship? Who lives and who dies? There are 15 choices listed on the test, but only nine people can be picked to survive. Their descriptions include race, gender and religion.

“It’s racist in every form,” Kennel says. “This had nothing to do with history, nothing to do with it, and what is it teaching them?”

According to 11-year-old Leah Kennel, other students in her history class were uncomfortable. One was so upset, she claims, that her classmate refused the assignment, ripped up the paper and was then reprimanded by the teacher

I saw this story on Facebook. I think if folks could get over the sensitive nature of the question that it would be an interesting exercise to examine prejudices we all hold.

I'm really not sure if it is appropriate for middle school kids but I don't have a problem with it nor would I have a problem if my kids were administered the quiz. I'm curious to know their answers to be honest.

For reference here is the quiz:

You are in a sea disaster and you have a lifeboat to save people. You can only save 9 people but there 15 people that need to be saved. Who boards your lifeboat?

1. A pregnant woman

2. An ex convict

3. A guy doctor

4. A girl doctor

5. A black guy

6. A white guy

7. A Hispanic woman

8. Donald Trump

9. Mr. Hagerman(the teacher)

10. Mr. Bobo(I think the principal)

11. A rabbi

12. Barack Obama

13. Justin Bieber

14. A police officer

15. A minister

This is an easy quiz for me. I save the pregnant woman (2 lives) and the other eight spots are chosen at random. Straws, names out of a hat, whatever works.

Using a random number generator, here are my results:

11) rabbi

6) white guy

12) Barack Obama

13) Justin Bieber

8) Donald Trump

4) A girl doctor

9) Mr. Hagerman

2) ex-convict

I would choose:

Pregnant woman

Both doctors

Hispanic woman

Rabbi

Barack Obama

Police officer

Minister

And the teacher

Reasoning - always save the women first, save the president (and I'm not a fan of his), and everyone else is someone by description dedicate their lives to help other people.

What it the ex-con is a woman?

BTW...I think that this is a very good assignment. I am not sure if it is age appropriate for middle school, but certainly it requires higher level thinking skills and challenges our own thoughts/beliefs.

I can only pick on the info given. The priest could have been a molester and one of the doctors could have been a drug addict too. Based on the choices though, that's how I would have picked.

I agree it could be a good exercise and make students think.

I need more info:

What was the ex-con in prison for? Rape? He doesn't make it. Growing weed? He's the 1st to come aboard. White collar crimes are ok.

Are the doctors real doctors or like Ross on Friends?

Does the hispanic woman speak any English?

How hot are the black and white guys? Are they muscular?

Is Obama still President? I can't have Joe Biden running the country.

Is the policeman overweight? I've got a pet peeve about overweight cops.

Does Trump have any money with him to pay for his spot on my raft?

Is the minister Catholic and if so, does he have any wine with him?

I would totally fail this quiz.

1. A pregnant woman...saved

2. An ex convict...not saved

3. A guy doctor...saved

4. A girl doctor...saved

5. A black guy...saved

8. Donald Trump...not saved

9. Mr. Hagerman(the teacher)...saved

12. Barack Obama...not saved

13. Justin Bieber...not saved

14. A police officer...saved

15. A minister...not saved

Last three for me were the guy doctor, the police officer and Justin Bieber. Bieber nearly made it due to being so young...but in the end I chose those that serve others over him.

What about the Beliebers?

They all stink. I'm taking 9 of my best buddies. At least I can complain at them without worrying about friendship.

Nobody is going to be noble and not include themselves in the saved people? I am very self-sacrificing in hypothetical situations.

I think the test is good for college for critical thinking. I think it's to intense for middle school.

I don't know if the test would show prejudice. Everyone besides the convict (depending the conviction) seems worth saving. It would just depend on what people value. I don't know if there are right or wrong answers. You have to save the women first for sure.

Nah, you're totally passing. Nothing in the quiz says you can't ask for more information in making your choices.

I feel like I am the only one thinking that the convict might potentially have survival skills that might be useful should we find an island or something.
